    3. Good Morning MOSTONERS, I know someone on the list will be able to answer my question. Has a final date been set for the 150 Anniversary celebration? Is there a certain place where events will be held? Several people have emailed me saying they would like to attend, and would like to know the details. Most people on the list live in other parts of the country so if some kind person could post the details of the celebration on the MOSTONE mailing list it would be great. Thanks, Jo

    3. Well folks, Got my Stone County paper in the mail today and noticed that Stone County is getting ready to celebrate it's 150th anniversary! Woooie!! This is just wonderful! Of course, this isn't exactly brand NEW news to me, because I was at the Nov. meeting of the Stone County Historical Society and was able to learn of some of the Society's plans to help celebrate! Lois Watkins is gathering old photos of places around the county depicting the way life was back then. These include photos of old towns, people doing business, working, and anything that would show how drastically the times have changed. You know the kind, sorta like the Before and After type! Unfortunately, I can't contribute because there are very few old photos of any kind from my family, much less showing them in action! My people were just too darn poor to have owned anything 'cept the little spot of land they were on, IF they were lucky! The only photo's I am proud to show off are the ones that were made into postcards by the folks at Branson! Yeppers! They came and took pictures of my old uncles house and his old white mule! Guess that's one way my family contributed to the colorful local history :} Well, most of you that have subscribed to this list for any length of time know by now that I usually don't post unless I want something..<G> So....here goes........ If you have an ancestor who appeared on the early census of Stone County please let me know. As you know, Stone County was merely a stopping off place for many settlers on their way West . I may never be able to find many of them, but I would certainly like to account for as many as possible! Information needed is : Census year; Township, House # ; Surname, and parents of Head of Household. Maiden name of spouse, her parents if known, and who did the children marry. This information will help in tracking our Old Settlers. Mind you, I don't need your entire family history or your research notes but I would sure appreciate any help you could give on identify those who stayed in Stone County long enough to be counted! Many of you have already sent me your family histories and I appreciate you so much! Now I am trying to locate old timers who apparently moved away and left no trial for me to follow! Hopefully I will have most of this done in time for our 150th year celebration so that I can present the Historical Society a copy of my research! :} Thanks in advance! I think there's cattle in it now, but I wouldn't bet me on that. Yeah, there's cattle there -- they'll come to the water for a drink or to wade in, when it's hot. The area off the north side, just east of Boston Ridge, fishermen have always referred to as "the cornfield". Some of the best trout fishing on the lake is right around there, where there's a steep drop-off to the main channel (the 1912 channel of White River). I can remember when I was a kid, listening to old-timers who predated Powersite Dam, talking about setting trotlines across the river in the same place. The big political hassle now, of course, is regulating the lake and current coming from Table Rock Dam. The slowing of movement of water out of Table Rock during the summer could spell the death sentence to trout fishing in Taneycomo, if it is not corrected. Many resort owners have complained to the state, with little success. Of course, all the "money" is at Table Rock.

    3. I realized when I got my copy of the Stone Co. post that it cut that link off, so it'll mess you up if you do like I do, and leave your e's "small" sized (not filling up your window) Here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gregvonda/index.html scroll down to "Genealogy", click, then to "Collateral Lines". There, you'll see the link to Boston Ferry (the list is alphabetical), and you can see them. I gotta warn you...them pictures are color, 2 are the "panoramic", and they take a while to load...go get your snack and refill your drink while you wait. Paul, I'm not sure exactly where this is in relation to Boston Ridge, but I would say as you look at the middle picture on that webpage, Boston Ridge is up the hill to the right. In other words, this would be just downstream from the ridge, or the ridge comes down into that little inlet (from the south? I think). I'm pretty sure that wasn't water-filled prior to the building of Powersite Dam, but on up the draw, it could have been a wet-weather spring. Wasn't every steep-sided draw a wet weather spring? Anyway, Greg has promised to take me out in a boat next year (when it gets warmer) and I'll know more. Despite spending the majority of my life here, I still find little stuff like that, and I don't know enough, which is aggervatin'. The field across the lake belongs to Kanakuk/Kanakomo, I THINK. I know you've seen it. Long, narrow, but a wonderful spot for what it got used for. I think there's cattle in it now, but I wouldn't bet me on that. So are you lost yet? <BG> V

    3. Jo and Barb (and anyone else) My grandmother attended school at Boston Center...it is located just east of the intersection of Hwy 248 and Hwy 160, and is technically in Taney County. The town/post office of Irma was close by, and Grandma's parents owned some land east of the school, too. It was where Grandma's mother attended church. The county line is just west of this area, and folks who lived along the Boston Road (248 now follows some of the old road) here included Boyd, Rantz, Cox, Jones, Keithley, and etc. I'm not quite sure how close it is by hillside (or as the crow flies) to Garber, but that was where Grandma attended school sometimes as well. The Boston Road was built in the early 1880s by William Boston, who owned a ferry on the White River upstream from Bull Creek (and the competition). He saw a need for a road other than the Springfield-Harrison road, which went from Spokane down the Bear Creek Valley and on to Bull Creek, then crossed via Hensley's ferry at the mouth of Bull. The S-H road flooded frequently, forcing teamsters and travelers to camp for days (if not weeks) before being able to ford the creeks. It's kind of odd, for I just uploaded some pictures of the site of Boston Ferry and the origins of the road http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gregvonda/greg/gregpeople/bostonfer ry.html The road joined the S-H road on the other side of the White River, going on to Kirbyville. It also joined the S-H road at its northern end, in either Spokane or Reno Springs (not sure exactly where, but inclined to think Spokane). Vonda

    3. Howdy! I am so very pleased to say--it's done. I've been promising and promising, and I finally finished uploading it less than an hour ago. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gregvonda/index.html Our gen site has people from Wyandotte Co. KS; Stone, Taney, Christian and Douglas Counties in MO; and a few folks from AR and OK. There are tons of pictures, some stories, and what information I have on Greg's and my direct lines. Some of the names involved include: Blansit, Brock/Brach, Bryan, Cook, Craig, Drake, Driffey, Gill, Harris, Henningson, Jackson, Kirkland, Kerns, Lampe, Lee, McHugh, O'Herin/O'Hearn, Sales/Sells, Sappington, Sheets, Slater, Smith, Steptoe, Teagarden, Becker, Bull, Bilyeu, Clinkenbeard, Cox, Daniels, Davis, Dimond, Evans, Ford, Fluth, Giles, Hatley, Howard, Macomb, Moore, Napier, Overstreet, Phenix/Phoenix, Price, Priest, Pope, Radloff, Roberts, Ruff, Serginer/Surginer, Slusher, Strann, Walker, Warden, Watson, Peveral, Watts, Wilson, Workman, Worley. Y'know, I say it's done...it's done enough. The saints above know there ain't a genealogist alive who can say their work is DONE...LOL I didn't want to know how many pages there are...and I still don't. Let's just say...I hope I've learned something... And while it's a beautiful icy night in Taney Co. MO, now that the website is "done", the snow and stuff can quit forcing me to stay home!
