Hello List, Does anyone have an idea on where I might find info on traveling preachers in Stone Co. - late 1880's to early 1920's? They also lived in the Co. around Cape Fair on the White River. The son is buried at the New Cape Fair Cemetary I believe. The father and son had same names - William Edwards - went by Bill. Any ideas would be appreciated. Have a safe New Years Eve - and an even better New Year!! Happy Hunting, Linda Howell

The main reason Reno should be of interest to Stone County researchers is that it sat right in that little "nook" of land that forms the corner of Christian, Taney, and Stone Counties. We've all learned that our people didn't particularly worry about county lines when it came to mail and that sort of thing. from "Christian Co. MO--1859-1959" by Mellie Stewart "Mr. and Mrs. Tom Phillips had a store at Reno, MO, and had the land marked for a city and a hotel, which wasn't used. They sold whiskey. She sold the store and land to Frank Kentling." (VKS note--Frank Kentling was the founder of Highlandville, MO, a few miles up the road from Spokane. I don't know for a fact that he owned or didn't own the store in Reno...this is the only place I've read that) "He had the store in 1898, until he sold to Nelson Valentine Stewart, the last of 1900 or 1901. Frank Kentling had another store, down the road from Reno, in 1915, where Orville Holt lives in Section 31." "Down the road" from Reno, if you use the common southern for down, would be in either Stone or Taney Counties. I never knew of Kentling owning a store anywhere but Highlandville, but he may have. Basically, the gist is that the store closed in the early 1930s, and that was the end of the town. The store was converted to a home and burned in 1986. A chart in the back of the book states that Reno was a town from 1881 to 1918, and that it was also called Tauria. The only listing I find right now for Eau de Vie is that it was a town from 1880-1907. I just had a "uh, duh" moment. You can go to http://www.livgenmi.com/mo1895mp.htm and see a map of where Reno is/was. The file is over 1700K, so it can take more than 5 minutes to download. Spokane isn't quite so far east. Eau de Vie, which is not shown here, was kinda in between Bluff and Swan in Taney county, only north, in Christian Co. There is also an article from the White River Valley Historical Quarterly about towns in Christian county http://198.209.8.166/wrvq/v4/n1/f70e.htm It talks about the mineral springs, too. I have some info on "Reno." There were two towns, "Odave" (Not real sure on spelling) and Reno. They were both towns that were built because of what was thought to be a "healing" mineral spring. From what I have been told, Odave had a livery stable, hotel, dance hall, and Reno had 3 hotels. Neither of the two towns have any buildings still standing. If you go through Spokane, on the old road past the school, you will pass a rock or sandstone house. There is a road, gravel I think, that turns to the left. That is Reno Hollow. They had the water tested and found out that it was not healing mineral spring, just plain spring water, and both towns died after that. I hope that helps some. I have not been there but my mother knows about it. She told me that there is a book that you can get at the Ozark Library for $6.00, it is "Christian County The First Hundred Years" She says that Reno and Odave is listed in there and it tells some about it. Hope that helps you.
Pama and others, Reno Springs Road goes from Bear Creek Road northwest to just south of Spokane--it is mostly a dirt road, but a good one. One of the reasons it started up was also because it was a popular camping place for teamsters running freight on the Springfield-Harrison Road, which ran down present-day Reno Springs Road to Bear Creek Road, then on into Walnut Shade. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if it was a Gideon or a Meadows or some other Taney/Christian county family that built the first hotel/"campgrounds" there. Eau de Vie (it is pronounced "O da Vee") was north of Bluff in Taney County, over the Christian County line, on Bull Creek, I think. Pama, that's where David William Wilson (my 3xg, your 2xg grandfather) and "Aint Sary" lived when he died in 1916. I've not been there, but Greg has taken me by the old townsite of Reno, which is only a couple miles upstream from the old Nash place on Bear Creek. Both towns were in Christian County. Pama, yu're jest gonna have ta come over and go gallivantin' wit' us'n sumtim. Hello List, Once again I am asking to see if any of you have any information that you might be willing to send my way. I am looking for as much information that I can get on a town called Reno, MO. I do have a 1895 Christian County Map of it and I know that it was founded in 1881 and ran thru 1918. I know it had a PO, General Store, etc.... So, if anyone has anything that they know might pertain to this please e-mail me. Warmest Smiles, Pama

Cindy, There are Popes all over Christian county in the late 1800s. I am a Pope descendant (from Bartholomew Co. IN to Marion Co. IA), but haven't been able to connect the White River Valley Popes to my line--I'm sure there's a connection somewhere. My 4xg grandmother was Margaret Pope b ca 1800 NC or TN, d 1840-1847, either IN or IA. Her husband was Christopher Cox; their daughter Mary Margaret was the wife of Abraham Macomb, who lived down where Dogwood Canyon in Stone Co. is now. I've not been able to find out why the Macombs came to SW MO, but I suspect it is because they had Pope relations here. I may have listed this before but I am new and don't know where to go from here. Can anyone please help!!! I am looking for info on my Great Grandfather Fred Pope. He is listed on the 1920 Stone Co. Census with his mother IDA Pope. My parents were divorced when I was little and I havn't been in contact with my father's side of the family until recently. They do not have any additonal info on the Pope line. I do know that Fred's father was not listed in 1920 Census (deceased ?) and I have been told that both Fred and his son (my Grandfather) Theron Joseph Pope died young. I was sent copies from the Stone Co. History book that have a article on the Merritt Line that refers to a Fred Pope but no other info available. Any info on the Pope line or the Merritt line would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Cindy Olson eolson@kscable.com

A new photo has been added to the Stone County Photo Album. It was sent to us by Jack Ross and includes members of the James T. Hemphill family. It is a great photo. Thanks Jack! Happy New Year to all the MOSTONE list subscribers. Jo & Shirley

Rich, My mother was born in 1901 and lived in Williams Twp. near Baxter. She went to school at McCullough and NoPone, I think this is what she told me before she passed away. Although I have an uncle in Oklahoma who could probably tell me for sure. Anyone living near Carr Lane could probably help you with this information also. I can ask Loren and Mildred Roden if there is any school records. I have had computer problems and have been off line for over two months and am just now catching up with e-mails. 'lived on the White River, near Lampe" This area would now be Kimberling, where the bridge crosses Tablerock Lake on Hwy 13. This was the White River, before the Lake was formed. It is too far from Baxter for Albert to have attended school at McCullough. Is anyone familiar with the schools in this area? Or the survival of school records? Mickey, My father was born at Baxter in 1930 and went to McCullough School, 2 or 3 miles southwest of Baxter on Big Indian Creek. He lived about 1 mile west of Baxter. In an effort to determine where Alfred lived I looked on the Stone Co census site and found this: 1910 James Township Pine Township 1228 Yocum, Joseph 56 1984 Yoacum Wm 23 , Matilda 55 , Sally 20 , Nancy J 15 , Albert 3 , Cleo 2
Thanks, the family in James Township is mine. My dad probably was in school from 1911 to 1919. He finished the 8th grade and then left home. I think by the time he was in school that they lived on the White River near Lampe. Would there be any school records, do you think? Again, thanks a lot.
