Particulars about ordering as well as a sample of what can be found in the book can be viewed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mostone/authors/settlers2.html We are looking forward to Volume III Jo
i forgot to mention in my email that i spent most of my time when i we growing up at aunt Lou's and her brother ern (spelling) place in marionville
Well, I guess we are distant cousins then, my grandmother myrtle frantz was Ralph's sister. Small world, huh?
Rebecca, Sorry forgot to mention in first E-mail. My Great Aunt Lousie married Ralph Goodall.
Rebecca, Gosh, I don't know. My father was born in Reeds Spring, he was Claude Vaughan married Ruby Myers, my grandfather had a shoe and boot shop in Galena. It stood across from the Courthouse, were now there is an empty lot, (or at least last time I knew it was empty.) The shop burned down but it was operated by Francis Jefferson Nash and his wife Amy (Bilyeu) Nash. Hopefully with some more info I can put this Nash line in order. Warmest Smiles, Pama Nash
Just to add to Jo's reply on the Stevens Crack Shot .22 Rifle barrel found on the family farm of Richard White: The Stevens Crack Shot Single Shot Rifle was available in both a model 15 and a model 16. Here are the descriptions from a collector's guide: Stevens No. 15 Crack Shot Single Shot Rifle..............value $175 Single shot. Calibers: 22, 25, 32, 38, and 44RF; also 25, 32, 38 and 44 centerfire. Barrel: 24, 26, 28, and 30 inches; octagonal. Weight: 6 1/2 to 8 3/4 pounds. Sights: Lymon ivory bead front sight and Lyman combination rear site on tang. Plain straight stock and forend. Made from 1900 to 1938. Stevens No. 16 Crack Shot Single Shot Rifle................. value $165 Rolling-block action. Takedown. Calibers: 22 and 32 rimfire. Barrel: 20 inches, round. Weight: 3 3/4 pounds. Blade front sight and dovetail non-adjustable rear sight on barrel. made from 1900 to 1913. The octagonal vs round barrel should tell which model it is. My guess, if you found the barrel alone with no other surviving metal parts nearby, is that it may have been the model 16 "takedown" model. For some additional trivia on Stevens, in case you are interested: J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass. Joshua Stevens started out as a toolmaker in Chester, Mass., his home town, then went to work for Cyrus Allen, a gunmaker in Springfield, Mass. For a short time he was employed by a small arms manufacturer in Hartford, CT. before moving to Chicopee Falls, where he began working for the Massachusetts Arms Company. At age 50, after receiving a patent on a simple breech-loading single shot pistol, Stevens decided to start his own arms making business, J. Stevens & Co. The first plant was located in a converted grist mill along the Chicopee River and produced a small single shot pistol in pocket and vest pocket models, based on Stevens' patent of September 6, 1864. It also turned out precision machinist's tools, which probably kept the company afloat in its early days. In 1886, the company was incorporated as the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company. By this time, Stevens was building target rifles and introduced many new cartridges to the shooting fraternity of a century or more ago. Of the Stevens rifle series, the Old Model Pocket rifles were among the first. These rifles were very light in weight (and strength) and eventually were followed by the heavier target rifles. The firm manufactured the Stevens Tip-Up or "Favorite" 22 single shot rifle, a popular arm of the day. All of the Stevens rifles are choice among today's collectors. Joshua Stevens remained with the firm until 1896 when he sold his interests in the business. The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company became a subsidiary of Savage Arms in 1936. Hope this helps. I am wondering if there is a possibility that Myrtle Titsworth might have been in the household with Thomas Melton, in the 1900 census for Taney Co.? It appears that there were several Titsworth folks that lived with other families. It might also be that my Myrtle had a different first name, or name on the census. I wonder if anyone knows of any that had an 'm' initial? I am trying to locate any possible information about a Myrtle Tittsworth, who married William Franklin David Reece, 7 June 1904, Christian Co., Missouri. I am wondering if she may not have been recorded on the census in a different name. I show that she was probably born around 1890. Wm. Reece died in about 1928. Myrtle rried William Minor, in 1929, also in Christian Co. Wm., Myrtle and family are on the 1910 census for Stone Co. Please let me know if you know anything about these folks. Thanks very much! Pama, I have Paralee Nix married to William Alvin Nash. I don't have a marriage record but Paralee (I don't have her first name) is the daughter of Thomas C. Nix, Jr. and Frances Casey. Paralee was born 6 Apr. 1852 and died 21 May 1924. Her brother, George W. Nix, is my gr-gr-grandfather. If you think this is the same person I would like to exchange information. Thanks, Loretta
I've had luck in removing rust with Naval Jelly--that pink stuff. Cheri Mello Torrance, CA (and my lights are still on! LOL)
I have a single shot lever action crackshot .22 cal. It comes in two pieces and is held together with a thumb screw. It is a real small rifle and is also called a "bootlegger" since it can be broken down and each half concealed in a pair of hip boots. The markings on my crackshot are Crackshot - 26 on the left side above the lever action, on the barrel it is marked with J. Stevens Arms Co. Pat.
