In the Stoddard County Marriage Records 1864-1899 I find the marriage of John A. Dowdy to Sarah M. J. Ezell on 04 Sep 1890. There is also a Sarah Ezell, daughter of Charles and Sarah Ezell enumerated in the 1880 census at age nine years (born 1871). I can find no Sarah or Mahala Gillis in the 1880 census, though she is apparently born in that state. In the 1900 census, the wife of John A. Dowdy is enumerated as Sarah. In succeeding census years she is enumerated as Mahala or Mahale. All the information in all the census data from 1900 forward looks to be the first marriage for each. The ages are consistent, as is all the other information. Then on the death certificate for Charles Newton Dowdy, the eldest son of John Armstead Dowdy (informant Charles' wife, Ollie (Waggoner) Dowdy), the name of his mother is Mahala Gillis. Can anyone help me clear up this question? If you can help me with this issue, please contact me at ruthmcarthur@comcast.net. Thank you.
