I agree with posting this information to the mail list, regarding the "familydiscover.com," It appears, they have linked to a lot of information on line and USGenWeb Project is among those links. Let me state, I have not checked on this, only from reading lots of mail from others about this situation. When a person subscribed to a company, any organization, for money, they expect new, fresh data. I am sure familydiscover.com, does furnish data, other than what we have on-line. And if you are browsing through records on-line, one should always check where the links are leading. It could be they have taken you to a site which is a free web site such as http://www.usgenweb.com or one of our archive pages, or county web sites. We can not stop the links from being placed on another organizations web site. We can only encourage folks to look at the URL when they change pages, by way of links. Judge for your self, if that organization furnished you with fresh material they have collected, or just a link to something you could access for free. NOTE: some of you may not be aware of, and really never needed to know about. "Rootsweb.com," furnishes the USGenWeb, free web space to post our county sites. And other ISP's do also, but rootsweb.com is the issue at this point. Because of this a county in each state in the United States has a CC. There are several important projects which are housed on http://www.rootsweb.com and the projects have free use of this web space. This FREE space can not be provided without a cost to someone. Untill recently this space was paid for by donations. Then when that, after a couple years, did not cover the expense, rootsweb, started a few projects of their own and allowed paid advertisement on THEIR OWN pages. still our county sites are charged nothing. As the amount of research being placed on these sites grew, so did the need for space. This year, rootsweb. has merged with family.com Ancestry.com. not so they can sell your donations, but for their own financial needs. They no longer request donations. We have been given a promise by Ancestry and Family .com, "that we will continue to operate our county web sites as we have in the past." There does seem to be an issue made by some, that Familydiscovery has linked to our work. My only opinion on this is, someone has to pay the bill. When I inquired from my own ISP about space to house the county web sites, they ask me 25 dollars a month per site. Since I volunteer my time and equipment for the work, I think 300 a year per site is more than I want to go. If this does not clear up any questions one has about the county web site. I can offer no more. I will continue to maintain the web site and hope all who have donated material will leave it in place. If you have donated material to the web site and wish to have it removed, ask. I will remove it for you. Thanks Phyllis, for bringing this issue up. It will have to be addressed sooner or later and no time like now, is my motto. This is really sort of funny but I just received a message from them (not to my address mind you but a blanket one) stating that I had been referred to them by another LARGE genealogy publishing company and inviting me to join their site for the $49.99 one time fee. I forwarded their message as spam to the appropriate ISPs and also sent them a letter asking if they could tell me who referred me to them. What do you bet, I dont' even receive an answer : ) Thanks for the warning and beware, I bet lots of folks will be receiving the same message.
