    1. [STODDARD, MO] Wife of John Armstead Dowdy, born. abt. 1871 in Missouri

Author: RuthMcArthur Surnames: Dowdy, Ezell, Gillis, Waggoner Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.stoddard/1636/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a dilema I am trying to solve; hopefully someone out there can help me. In the Stoddard County Marriage Records 1864-1899 I find the marriage of John A. Dowdy to Sarah M. J. Ezell on 04 Sep 1890. There is also a Sarah Ezell, daughter of Charles and Sarah Ezell enumerated in the 1880 census at age nine years (born 1871). I can find no Sarah or Mahala Gillis in the 1880 census, though she is apparently born in that state. In the 1900 census, the wife of John A. Dowdy is enumerated as Sarah. In succeeding census years she is enumerated as Mahala or Mahale. All the information in all the census data from 1900 forward looks to be the first marriage for each. The ages are consistent, as is all the other information. Then on the death certificate for Charles Newton Dowdy, the eldest son of John Armstead Dowdy (informant Charles' wife, Ollie (Waggoner) Dowdy), the name of his mother is Mahala Gillis. Can anyone help me clear up this question? If you can help me with this issue, please contact me at ruthmcarthur@comcast.net. Thank you. 1. [STODDARD, MO] N. Antioch Cemetery
    2. Does anyone know who cares for N. Antioch Cemetery, outside of Bloomfield? And how to contact them? I was there a few weeks ago and I have a bit of a concern about what appears to be someone else thinking no one apparently cares about the graves of my great-grandparents and nearly blocking their gravestones with an extended memorial of someone else in front of them. Not really sure what can be done about it so I guess I should talk first to the person who takes care of the cemetery and go from there? (Or should I contact the city/county??) Thanks, valerie Valerie Holifield http://vholifield.com

Although I do not have a lot to tell you tht you prob don't know, I just wanted to make a connection with you. Rachel Oakley's father was William from New Jersey, mother unknown. Her siblings were Abraham, Mary Oakley Riley, Elizabeth Oakley Meek, your Rachel Oakley Bennett, and Aaron Oakley. Aaron Oakley was the father of many kids, including Benjamin. Benjamin was the father of many including William. William was my grandfather, George Oakley, father, who was the father of my mother, Allene Oakley Patterson. So Rachel's brother Aaron was my ggggradfather. I do know Lindsey and Rachel's daughter Sarah married Taylor Driskel, the son of John Driskel, who was the head of a notorious gang of murderers in Illinois. He was the head of the Driskel/Brody gang. Look them up onthe internet. Interesting. Please feel free to e mail me at leahanne@moseleyschool.com and I would love to hear what you know. I have a copy of Wi! lliam's will dividing his estate among the 4 kids plus the children of Aaron. Aaron died before his father did. If you said your line went to Smith Co Tn early 1800's Then you must be from Caty Hicks 1820 smith Co Tn listed as Casey 1830 Smith Co Tn line ? am I correct. Because My Line Nancy Ann Hicks (Listed as Ann Hicks 1820 Smith Co. I descend from Isabel Adaline Duncan, who was m. to Leonard Sifford circa 1852, probably in Stoddard Co. MO. (She later married Andrew Moore, and I'm trying to determine if she is the Adaline Bradford living in the Goforth household in 1850. If so, then she had another marriage prior to the one with Leonard Sifford.) Isabel had a sister, Susan Jane Duncan, who first married John Harris. They were the ancestors of Dorothy Harris Holified, whose grandmother was Minerva Carolyn Sifford, who married George A. McPheeters. (Minerva was the daughter of Peter and Charity Sifford.) Isabel had another sister, Nancy Duncan, who married Caleb Hopkins, and they had a brother, William Turner Duncan, who married Mary "Polly" Sifford, daughter of Lewis Sifford. Do you know who the parents were of these Duncans? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. However, I wasn't looking for it so I can't be sure. I research Hicks and have information from 1850's - 1870's. What I do have is an affidavit on behalf of my great-great-grandmother's widows pension application submitted by Samuel Scism who was friend and neighbor to my Stones, Campbells and Hicks. He was married to a Hobbs, I think. If you are interested I will try to dig it out. Linda Brian (slwb247@aol.com) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My Hicks are also from VA, early 1700's. They migrated to Smith Country TN in the early 1800's. They then moved to Southeast MO in the late l840's. early 1850's. Most settled in Stoddard Cty, but others were in Madison etc. What are the chances that there is no connection? Very Small. After 30 years of research, 10 pretty intensive, I just stumbled across cousins in Western MO. It is delightful!! Her sibling is George A. McPheeters (b. May 1858 in MO; deceased 07 Jun 1925; burial North Antioch Cemetary, Bloomfield, Stoddard Co. MO). George married (14 Sep 1879 Stoddard Co., MO) Minerva Carolyn Sifford (b. Dec 1857 MO; deceased 1927; burial North Antioch Cemetary, Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., MO). Their children were Lithia M. McPheeters (b. Aug 1881), William A. McPheeters (b. Feb 1885), Alva E. McPheeters (b. 1888), Zora E. McPheeters (b. May 1892), and Louis McPheeters (b. Nov 1894). My information suggests that Thomas McPheeters was the second child of George McPheeters (b. 25 Apr 1813 Hawkins Co., TN) and Milly Armstrong (b. Abt. 1811 TN; d. Aft. 1860). By my records, this indicates that Thomas was a nephew of John Bovell McPheeters (b. 25 Feb 1828 Hawkins Co., TN; d. Jan 1905 Butler, MO; burial Cypress Creek Cm, Flatwood, MO). The information I have on John Bovell is that he married (10 Apr 1854 Stoddard Co., MO) Susana Clementina Vashti Kelly (b. 1834 Alexander, IL; d. 18 Nov 1869 Flatwood, MO; no issue) and subsequently (1870) Margaret Howell, with whom he fathered nine children, one of whom I presume is your ancestor. There is too much information on all of these for me to list - in part due to the terrific research of Harold McPheeters, who lives not too far from me in Atlanta. It has been tremendously frustrating not to be able to locate Mary Elizabeth's burial site. I have not been able to find an obituary. One of those nagging missing pieces. I would be happy to send to you a McPheeters descendants file, if you would like, particularly so we could compare notes on the accuracy and completeness of data. Please let me know. All the best.
