William H. Bess married Sarah "Sallie" Bess (his cousin). One of their children was Martin, born 1829 in MO, and he married twice. First wife was Lucinda, b. 1837, second wife was Jane, b, 1848. Martin and Jane had two daughters, Caroline, b. 1861, and Rebecca J. born 1868. Family tradition says that William H. was killed by guerillas during the Civil War. They were living in the home of Martin and Lucinda. Apparently she died sometime afterwards, and he remarried Jane. Have no children for Lucinda. Cemetery records show Sarah R. as the wife of William Christian, and he is listed as a Woodsman. Perhaps her name was Sarah Rebecca Jane. Not uncommon for children to have three or more names. Can give you more on the earlier family if you would like. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Is it possible that Sarah was her nick-name? I have conflicting info showing two different names for her, but I'm sure they are the same person. The other name I have is Rebecca Elizabeth Bess, daughter of Jane (maiden name unknown) and Martin Bess. One World Tree has Rebecca Elizabeth Bess b. 1868, married to William Christian. I have also found records on the Missouri State Archives Birth records with her listed as Rebecca E. "Christain" (probably an error) married to William "Christain", their child's last name is listed as Christian, so I'm pretty sure it's just an error. Of course there is still the question of the death certificate listing her mother as Mary Ellis (not Jane). Help! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
