If you are subscribed to the Butler co. or Stoddard Co. mail list using the PBMO and have been changed to SEMO addresses, I have been told you will not be able to post to the mail list using the pbmo mail address. I have advised you to unsubscribe using the pbmo and resubscribe using the semo address. Now, I have been advised I may have been incorrect in this. You should have the list owner do the transfer of address for you to have it done correctly. If I have caused confusion, consider the source. I have the Stoddard Co., mail list and can handle any problems for that county. Dennis West has the Butler mail list and any changes will need to be directed to Dennis. I am addressing both Stoddard and Butler counties at the same time as the problem is in both counties. Thank you for your patience. Posted on: Stoddard Co. Mo Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/Stoddard?read=83 Surname: Alcorn ------------------------- I have just received a school group picture showing my grandfather & 3 of his siblings. One child is holding a slate that says TATUM SCHOOL Dec 20, 09. Can anyone tell me where the Tatum school was located? I'm pretty sure my grandfather lived around Dexter at that time so I'm thinking it's in Stoddard County but I could be wrong. Thanks!
Friends, John A. (b. 1865), Ida M.(b. 1871), Virginia E. (Jennie) (b. 1874) and George A. CHRISTIAN (b. 1877) --all siblings--had a precious father, James CHRISTIAN, who served with distinction in the Civil War--being twice wounded from musketball in his 3 year tour of duty. Their mother was Elizabeth (Betty) SCISM-Christian. James died in 1908. Betty in 1880. Both are buried at N. Antioch Cem., N. Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., MO. I'd like to connect with any descendant of John, Ida, Jennie or George to exchange info. Would esp. like to discover if anyone has pictures of James Christian (&/or Betty) . After the War, James was, for a time, quartermaster in the G.A.R. post. This G.A.R. post was the Tom Walker Post # 379 which met at the Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, Stoddard Co. MO. Do pictures of the past quartermasters exist? Or any family member have his photo from his soldiering days? In the Company Descriptive Book of Company D, 10th Regimental Iowa Infantry appears this description of James: "Age 23 years; height 6 feet 1 inch. Complexion fair; Eyes blue; Hair dark; Where born Hocking (sic) Co. E. Tenn.; Occupation farmer." Please relatives & friends, help! Rev. Nathan R. Riley Orange, CA P.S. Ida is my great-grandmother.

The following article appeared in Butler County's Area Footprints. Since my father is mentioned in this article (Otha Riley) and since I know he had connections with both Butler and Stoddard County, I'm guessing some of these others named may have, too. WHAT I AM SEEKING IS CONTACT WITH ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE KNOWN MY FATHER AND WOULD BE WILLING TO SHARE INFO. ALSO I REMEMBER MY FATHER MENTIONING LUCILLE (ALEXANDER) ACRE. IS SHE STILL ALIVE? FREE PENTECOSTAL PLEASANT HILL CHURCH ALSO KNOWN AS LITTLE DUMP CHURCH W S (Vess) Hill and his wife Sarah Johnson Hill and Roy Mondy and his wife Belle and several volunteers built the church in late 30's. It was used for church worship until the late 40's. This was a community church and anyone was welcome to come and preach In earlier years a railroad ran towards Broseley about where 51 hwy is now. About 3 miles north of Broseley on the left side of road on the W S Hill farm is where the church was located. The church became known as LITTLE DUMP CHURCH. Sarah Johnson Hill played the piano and loved to sing. This little church was blessed with several persons who were good musicians. Among the families who attended services included; Charley and Bell Duke; their children, Mildred,Genevieve,Juanita and Raymond. This family later performed on a radio station in Poplar Bluff with the program being called, DUKE FUNNY FAMILY. Ralph and Genetta Brown with son Leo & wife Marie(Haislip)Brown. The Goble family. Richard Wells family lived across the road from church and attended services a lot. Richard's wife name was Snow. Charley Hayes married Della Hill and they attended. Several young ladies would walk the three miles to attend church there often. Some of these were; Lottie and Lucille Alexander, Thelma and Marie Foster, Hazel and Neosha Poole, and Julia,Arinda, Ester and Nancy Bates. Fred and Ethel (Branch) Riley and their three sons;Otha, Holly & Ralph. Another family,L.K.Downs,wife and children living @ 12 miles east of Batesville would come to church in their wagon pulled by horses. Their children were; Ruth,Bertha, Vernice; Martha,Lola and Mastis. Mastis (Hoss) married Christine Ennis. B.W. Williamson & wife Sally attended with Sally preaching some. Some of the preachers that preached at LITTLE DUMP included; Green Swain and his wife Della. Walley Deck who lived at Broseley and was married to Lula Lane who was the daughter of preacher Luther W Lane. Luther W Lane was also one of the preachers. George Hullet who was also a barber at Fisk and was married to Florence Wallis. They had two children. There was a preacher who came from I11 and built a parsonage and stayed about two years. His name was Hodge and his wife Phoeby could play the accordion and sing. John Arkley"Art" Dodson and his family attended LITTLE DUMP CHURCH. ,His daughter Dona married Kirby Jones. Two of his sons, Silas and Leonard Dodson played baseball at Broseley with Elmer and Lloyd Warren. Another son Hubert didn't play baseball. Of all the preachers probably "Art" Dodson preached here the longest. I'm sure countless number of people received a blessing from attending this church. Like a lot of small community churches as persons moved away the attendance dropped and eventually the doors closed. The property was sold and Jack Barker dismantled the church and built a nice home on the site. Information obtained from Dona(Dobson)Jones; Leo Brown,Lucille (Alexander)Acre . I don't normally do this But, I learned, something I wanted to share. When I looked at what happened through my parents life time, and compared with mine. I think I will rethink the old saying, with each generation, things change faster. There was a lot more (in my opinion) happened in my parents life span than in mine, and I am near the years they lived. See what you think about how fast things change. http://www.ourtimelines.com/createtl.html You can print this out in TEXT for keeping in a file. I'm looking for parents and siblings of Mary Ann OWEN/OWENS, born around 1850, allegedly in Calhoun Co, AL. She later married Jesse C. WALKER, who was originally from Indiana (b.c. 1828/1829). I believe the couple married in Missouri where Jesse C. WALKER had been living for a number of years with his first family. His first wife died, and then he married Mary Ann OWEN/OWENS, probably between 1871-1883. Jesse C. WALKER and his second wife, Mary Ann, had three children of their own in Dexter (Stoddard Co), MO. They moved to Greenway (Clay Co), AR, around 1890. Both are buried in Greenway, AR. If anyone has background information on any of these individuals, particularly Mary Ann OWEN/OWENS, I would be pleased to find out. Thanks, Joan -- Email: [email protected]
