I agree with posting this information to the mail list, regarding the "familydiscover.com," It appears, they have linked to a lot of information on line and USGenWeb Project is among those links. Let me state, I have not checked on this, only from reading lots of mail from others about this situation. When a person subscribed to a company, any organization, for money, they expect new, fresh data. I am sure familydiscover.com, does furnish data, other than what we have on-line. And if you are browsing through records on-line, one should always check where the links are leading. It could be they have taken you to a site which is a free web site such as http://www.usgenweb.com or one of our archive pages, or county web sites. We can not stop the links from being placed on another organizations web site. We can only encourage folks to look at the URL when they change pages, by way of links. Judge for your self, if that organization furnished you with fresh material they have collected, or just a link to something you could access for free. NOTE: some of you may not be aware of, and really never needed to know about. "Rootsweb.com," furnishes the USGenWeb, free web space to post our county sites. And other ISP's do also, but rootsweb.com is the issue at this point. Because of this a county in each state in the United States has a CC. There are several important projects which are housed on http://www.rootsweb.com and the projects have free use of this web space. This FREE space can not be provided without a cost to someone. Untill recently this space was paid for by donations. Then when that, after a couple years, did not cover the expense, rootsweb, started a few projects of their own and allowed paid advertisement on THEIR OWN pages. still our county sites are charged nothing. As the amount of research being placed on these sites grew, so did the need for space. This year, rootsweb. has merged with family.com Ancestry.com. not so they can sell your donations, but for their own financial needs. They no longer request donations. We have been given a promise by Ancestry and Family .com, "that we will continue to operate our county web sites as we have in the past." There does seem to be an issue made by some, that Familydiscovery has linked to our work. My only opinion on this is, someone has to pay the bill. When I inquired from my own ISP about space to house the county web sites, they ask me 25 dollars a month per site. Since I volunteer my time and equipment for the work, I think 300 a year per site is more than I want to go. If this does not clear up any questions one has about the county web site. I can offer no more. I will continue to maintain the web site and hope all who have donated material will leave it in place. If you have donated material to the web site and wish to have it removed, ask. I will remove it for you. Thanks Phyllis, for bringing this issue up. It will have to be addressed sooner or later and no time like now, is my motto. Did you ever wonder what state someone's S.S# was issued in? Here's how to tell. SAMPLE LETTER TO ORDER ORIGINAL SS APPLICATION AT BOTTEM OF PAGE WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN: The nine-digit Social Security number is divided into three parts. The first three numbers generally indicate the state of residence at the time a person applies for his or her card.Originally, the lowest numbers were assigned to the New England states, and the numbers grew progressively higher in the South and West. However, in recent years, this geographical relationship has been disrupted somewhat by the need to allocate numbers out of sequence as state populations change. The middle two digits of a Social Security number have no special significance, but merely serve no break the numbers into blocks of convenient size. The last four characters represent a straight numerial progression of assigned numbers. SSA has issued more than 383 million Social Security numbers, and about 6 million new numbers are assigned each year. But even at this rate, there will be no need to reissue the same numbers, revise the present system, or devise a new numbering system for several generations. For this reason, SSA plans to continue using the nine-digit number. 001-001 New Hampshire 387-399 Wisconsin 004-007 Maine 400-407 Kentucky 008-009 Vermont 408-415 Tennessee 010-034 Massachusetts 416-424 Alabama 035-039 Rhode Island 425-428 Mississippi 040-049 Connecticut 433-439 Arkansas 050-134 New York 433-439 Louisiana 135-158 New Jersey 440-448 Oklahoma 159-211 Pennsylvania 449-467 Texas 212-220 Maryland 468-477 Minnesota 221-222 Delaware 478-485 Iowa 223-231 Virginia 486-500 Missouri 232-236 West Virginia 501-502 North Dakota 237-246 North Carolina 503-504 South Dakota 247-251 South Carolina 505-508 Nebraska 252-260 Georgia 509-515 Kansas 261-267 Florida 516-517 Montana 268-302 Ohio 518-519 Idaho 303-317 Indiana 520 Wyoming 318-361 Illinois 521-524 Colorado 362-386 Michigan 525&585 New Mexico 526-527 Arizona 575-576 Hawaii 528-529 Utah 531-539 Washington 540-544 Oregon 545-573 California 574-Alaska 577-579 District of Columbia 580-Virgin Islands 581-585 Puerto Rico, Guam 700-729 Railroad INVALID SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS 1.
