    2. RAY A. BAYENS - ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT DUBOURG HIGH St. Louis Post-Dispatch - November 2, 2000 Ray A. Bayens , a longtime coach and athletic director at Bishop DuBourg High School, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at the school. He had just completed a two-mile jog when he died, apparently of a heart attack. He was 64 and lived in the Affton area. Mr. Bayens had been associated with the school's athletic department for 36 years. In 1964, he joined the faculty as a track and baseball coach and was named assistant football and sophomore basketball coach six years later. From 1983 to 1992, he was head basketball coach. He was named athletic director in 1985, a position he held until his death. "The man probably handled kids as honestly and fairly as any man that I have ever dealt with," said Don Burrus, a freshman football coach at the school. "The kids came back year after year to see him after they graduated, and that's testimony in itself." Mr. Bayens was named the 1991 National Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Council for American Private Education. Mr. Bayens attended Moberly Junior College in Moberly, where he played basketball. In 1957, he enlisted in the Army and served 18 months as a cryptographer at the Pentagon. When he left the Army, he enrolled at Washington University, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Among survivors are his wife, Susan Bayens of Affton; a son, Mark Bayens of Mehlville; a daughter, Karen Miklich of Creve Coeur; a sister, Mary Patricia Gold of San Diego; and four grandchildren.
