Author: wdonath Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.stlouis/9989/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My name is Bill DONATH. I am president of the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society in Lincoln, Illinois. I am searching for information on Henry STURGES, father of Walter STURGES. Walter is listed as living in Central Township, St. Louis County, in the 1910 Census. He was a printer/editor just as his father, Henry, was. Henry was a newspaper publisher in Colfax County, New Mexico, during the 1880's and 1890's. Henry was editor of The Lincoln Herald, Lincoln, Illionis, from 1859-1862. In 1862 he joined the 4th US ILL CAV and served throughout the war with promotions to Captain in the 61st US ILL INF and the 2nd US Tenn. INF. He returned to Lincoln after the war and was editor of the Lincoln Statesman. By 1870 Henry was in Springfield, Illinois. In the 1880 Census he was in Las Animas County, Colorado. The 1890 Veteran's Census and the 1900 Census have Henry located across the state line in Colfax County, New Mexico. He died in Polk County, Oregon, 13 Feb 1904. The reason I am trying to track Henry is to find out what happened to a collection of papers he wrote about his experiences during the Civil War. I have 32 of his early Civil War letters sent to the Lincoln Herald. I would like to track down the remaining letters/articles he may have written. Henry had three children: Walter b: 1860, Frank b: 1861, and Lydia b: 1872. Other information about the STURGES family may be helpful in locating descendents.
