This is what I've found so far. >From the book: Westmoreland and Portland Places: The History and Architecture of America's Premier Private Streets, 1888 - 1988 Julius K. Hunter, Robert C. Pettus, Leonard Lujan University of Missouri Press, 1988 Architecture, 219 pages The six principal landowners [of the future Forest Park land] had done virtually nothing to improve the tract. More than one thousand acres lay in its natural state... Of all the property owners, Robert Forsyth probably had the greatest sentimental attachment to the land, as he was the only one who had actually lived there. In fact, the Forsyth home became The Cottage, a popular restaurant for bicycle riders in the 1890's. It was replaced by a larger building in 1893. Forsyth's son William recalled explorations in the vast forest around their home, when father and son hunted wild turkeys, ducks, and squirrels. He also remembered flocks of wild pigeons in such numbers that their weight caused large tree limbs to snap off like pipe stems. The litigation may have been too much for Robert Forsyth, who died eight months after the passage of the legislation and shortly after Judge Wagner's ruling. The defense of the Forsyth estate fell to his son William. Loving the countryside and hating the city, William had moved to Kirkwood -- ironically another Leffingwell project.
