Unfortunately as you suggest, the records that you have indicated don't tie up. I'd like to find the marriage record but can't find anything for 1898 St. Louis (as in the 1910 census) but have turned up nothing - a military record suggests that Matt was in the infantry before he was married and so they weren't necessarily married in St. Louis.
