My GR GR grandfather, Capt. William Grant, was stationed there at the time of his death in 1864, I believe. (A son was born there 2 Sep 1854.) He was on the Steamer Burlington, leaving St. Louis, with the payroll for his troops when he was overtaken by thieves and killed and thrown overboard, or thrown overboard and drowned in the Mississippi River (this is the story one of his sons told who was about 9 years old at the time). This drowning occurred 31 Aug 1864. I have his military records from when he first went into the U.S. service in Lowell, Massachusetts on 3 Jan 1838. It only gave his age and that he was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. I am hoping there are some records from Jefferson Barracks which might give a birth date, at least, so I can research his family in Scotland. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
