This is what I've found so far. >From the book: Westmoreland and Portland Places: The History and Architecture of America's Premier Private Streets, 1888 - 1988 Julius K. Hunter, Robert C. Pettus, Leonard Lujan University of Missouri Press, 1988 Architecture, 219 pages The six principal landowners [of the future Forest Park land] had done virtually nothing to improve the tract. More than one thousand acres lay in its natural state... Of all the property owners, Robert Forsyth probably had the greatest sentimental attachment to the land, as he was the only one who had actually lived there. In fact, the Forsyth home became The Cottage, a popular restaurant for bicycle riders in the 1890's. It was replaced by a larger building in 1893. Forsyth's son William recalled explorations in the vast forest around their home, when father and son hunted wild turkeys, ducks, and squirrels. He also remembered flocks of wild pigeons in such numbers that their weight caused large tree limbs to snap off like pipe stems. The litigation may have been too much for Robert Forsyth, who died eight months after the passage of the legislation and shortly after Judge Wagner's ruling. The defense of the Forsyth estate fell to his son William. Loving the countryside and hating the city, William had moved to Kirkwood -- ironically another Leffingwell project. In the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census they are living in Carondelet. They had 6 children. I have identified 5 of them from the census - Annie b Dec 1889, Marguerite b Aug 1892, Charley b abt 1896, Harry b abt 1897, and Theresa Helen b Jan 1904. Marguerite married Reginald Reed and they had at least one daughter Helen born about 1918. Theresa married my great uncle, John Pohlmann Wright in Australia in 1938. Her first marriage was to Leroy Vocker in 1926. Theresa and John moved back to Missouri in 1942 where they lived in Shrewsbury. My father believes this house had belonged to someone in her family. I have a photo album with some very old pictures that I believe may belong to this family. I have had the album for many years but just this week discovered Theresa's maiden name and family. I seem to be about 5 1/2 years late. A fellow family member pointed out your post to me. Usually I've found the last name spelled "Huelsing" or "Hulsing". I've also found several records pertaining to this family. Georg Huelsing married Margaret Mary Hesspling on 25 Apr 1854 in St. Louis (found in St. Louis Marriage Records 1804-1876 and Missouri Marriage records 1805-2002). I don't know when he immigrated, but Georg was naturalized on 21 Jul 1857. He died on 20 Jul 1888 and is buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery with Margaret Mary, who died on 2 Jan 1915. Margaret arrived at New Orleans on the ship Jeverland on 18 Jan 1854. She came from Bremen with Engeline Hesspling, probably her sister. Catherina (whose name is spelled in a variety of ways from a variety of sources) was George Winkler's 3rd wife. Her siblings were Michael (1863-1933), Elizabeth (1865-?), and Mary (1867-?). She died on 28 Jun 1936. For a time after she was widowed she lived with her brother Michael in St. Louis George is the son of Nicholas Winkler (1818-1872) and Magdalena Thomas (1818-1877). He is one of 9 known siblings. He was born on 28 Mar 1842 in Germany. I do not know when the family came over, but it was probably somewhere between 1847-1849 (according to my research, a brother in 1847 was born in Germany and the next born in 1849 in Illinois). He was married twice before Catherine, and the wives apparently died in childbirth. George fought in the Civil War as evident by a widower's pension declaration made by Catherina. He died on 15 Jun 1888, a month before Catherina's father Georg dies. He is also buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Freeburg Illinois. His tombstone is at the front of the cemetery, next to Georg and Margaret Huelsing. Apparently Nicholas and Magdalena Winkler are also buried in the cemetery, but I have not been out to look for the stone yet. Catherina's grave is in the middle of the cemetery. My family is descended from George and Catherina's son: Philip George Winkler. Which sibling did your family descend from? There was always a family story that George Winkler committed suicide by hanging himself in a barn. I'm curious about this as suicides would not normally be buried in a Catholic cemetery. It is one thing that I would like to dig up. I have pictures of the gravestones, plus scans of the marriage and death certificates of many of these people. I also have 1 picture of George Winkler and of Catherine Huelsing/Winkler. I found many of the records at the LDS website, where the archdiocese of Belleville houses their scanned records. See here to tell you how to get there: http://www.stclair-ilgs.org/cath.htm Although it looks like right now the records from Belleville are down for maintenance. You can also view my tree ate http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/14243314/family?fpid=80932344. I would knowing any further information you may have, especially family photos and stories. Hope this helps. Take care! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
