Were they Catholic or Church of England? Catholic Church records were microfilmed by the Mormon church. You might want to look at Dave Lossos' website which has a lot of genealogical "stuff" regarding St. Louis City and County. http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com/ As well as the ST. Louis Public Library: http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm You might want to ask the public library about the marriage record first, It would be less expensive. St. Louis County Library: http://www.slcl.lib.mo.us/slcl/sc/res-pro.htm The family appears on the 1860 census in the 8th district? Ben R Crunden 41 b. England Mary 34 b. England Fred (?) male 14 b. England Frank male 1 b. Missouri Mary appears on the 1880 census with sons Fred and Frank. Census shows that Fred was born in England but Frank was born in Missouri. Mary was born in England as was her mother; father born in Wales. No Benjamin with family. Found Mary, Fred and Frank on the 1870 census. No Benjamin. So Benjamin either died between the two censuses or left the family. Cannot find Mary or Frank on the 1900 census but Frank is most likely mistranscribed since he appears on the 1910 census. You might want to take a look at the city directories that are available at the SL Public Library as well as checking the index for obits. If you request any items from the library, group your requests separately-all obits in one email, all city directories in another. Seems odd that the oldest son was born in England but that Benjamin and Mary married here unless they didn't get married in England or they married outside of the church and wanted to get married in church when they were in St. Louis. Since you are in England, can you tell me how to find Catholic churches in England, some where around Yorkshire-not real sure about this. Georgia

Hi Everyone, Kathy Smith from St. Louis Public Library. I would like to invite you to a free genealogy class that we are offering. The class is "Making Sense of the Census: Finding Your Ancestors in Census Reports." We will be joined by special guest Dennis Northcott of the Missouri Historical Society, who will be sharing his expertise with us. The program will cover how to make the best use of Federal censuses, as well as what can be found in state, local, and special censuses, what exists, and where it can be found. Mr. Northcott will focus on the MHS holdings, while SLPL staff will look at materials for other states as well as Federal censuses and census substitutes. If you've ever had a question about censuses, now is the time to ask! The program is scheduled for Saturday, November 13, from 10AM to Noon at Central Library, 1301 Olive Street downtown. The program is free and open to the public; you do not need to be a resident of the city or have a library card to attend. Parking is free. Registration is strongly suggested. Please call (314) 539-0385 or email me at mailto:ksmith@slpl.lib.mo.us for registration or further information. Hope to see you there! Sincerely, Kathleen J. Smith Librarian History & Genealogy

The marriage of Benjamin to Mary in St Louis was in 1842. It seems rather strange that there would be two Benjamin Robert CRUNDENs both coming from England to St Louis, and both having a Mary as a wife. (The name CRUNDEN is quite unusual). Unless they married in St Louis, returned to England for a short time, and then went back to St Louis. A real puzzle!! Thanks for your interest. Dave

The one thing that dosen't match is mary's maiden name, but thought I would let you know anyway. hope this helps. Michele

While researching my family (KRALMAN, KOEBBE, SCHULTE) in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in St. Louis, I found something that I don't understand. Mary KATASCHWUK was buried in the family plot (Section 29, Lot 13E) and I have no idea of her connection to my family. The date of her burial is November 16, 1916. I'm hoping someone else on this mailing list is researching the KATASCHWUK surname and can enlighten me. WASHBURN, in business in St. Joseph, MO late 1800s. They were in the music business---the same profession as my Robert E. WASHBURN in St. Louis from about 1886-1910--and I think there was a family relationship. Robert E. WASHBURN lived in Green County, Springfield---from at least 1870 and had a 1st married in 1885 to an ANNIE MORMAN in Springfield. They divorced in 1888 according to an online Green County record. He was at the same time, writing and publishing his music in St. Louis, MO. Below are records I have collected, listed in St. Joseph City Directory online records . . . THOMAS J. WASHBURN--AND RICHARD C. WASHBURN . . . . .I have collected records from city directories for several Washburns, including Thomas and Richard who seem to have worked together---in a music type business. RICHARD C. I wonder if they were related to a Robert E. WASHBURN born 1864/65 in Missouri, who by about 1886, certainly by 1890, was in the music business in St. Louis---composing and publishing his own music and teaching. This Robert E. WASHBURN's parents are unknown---except that his mother was very likely a Lulu or Louisa, born about 1846---possibly born CORN (spelling?). A 5yr. old Robert WASHBURN and mother Louisa, 24, were living in Springfield, Green, MO on the 1870 census---and I think this could be my Robert E. WASHBURN, b 1864. Unable to track Louisa WASHBURN (perhaps she died?) I wonder who raised my Robert E. WASHBURN---and who might have been able to provide for him a music background / education that led him to choose his career in music. More on Robert WASHBURN: In 1885, he had a 1st marriage to an Annie MORMAN in Springfield, Green, MO. (and 1910 census--married then to Mary E. Cavanaugh-- in St. Louis shows 2 marriages.). I found a divorce record for Annie and Robert in 1888, also in Springfield, Green Co., MO. I have music written and published by him in St. Louis in this time period, so he / they might have been living in St. Louis--or he was traveling back and forth. There is another possibility for Robert on the 1880 census, living and working as a farm hand on the farm of Jacob BRADBURY in Jasper County----actually the county my "family lore "gives as Robert's birthplace (Carthage, MO).I have Robert and his family by his 2nd wife on the 1900 and 1910 census in St. Louis, MO. Robert E. WASHBURN, Mary E.(Cavanaugh), children--Robert E., b 1897, John L. born 1901, Mary E. born 1902. Robert the father died at his home on Natural Bridge Road in October 1910 and is buried in an unmarked common grave in St. Peter's Cem. The rest of the family is buried in Mem. Park.
