I think it was on Washington Ave. and 17th Street. I have located in the 1900 census that my great great grandmother, Cornelia Clifford lived here with her daughter, Nellie Blair (listed as hotel keeper) and her granddaughter Josephine Blair.
I think that street name is probably Hodiamont, going on memory. Maureen

The one thing I am sure of is that Katherine Sherman died in St. Louis. She was living with my family at the time. I have our old home address but am having trouble pinpointing a death year. I found her on the 1910 IL census with the birth year of 1898 I just received her mother's death cert. It states that she (the mother) was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery. I cannot read the street name but I think it was 1125 Hoddiemont Ave. Could you clairfy this street name? Maybe they are buried together. I would appreciate any help available.

I am in New Hampshire. My only connection to St. Louis is just a possible one not a definite one. I've been trying to learn more about Catherine (LYONS) RAFTERY of St. Louis. She married Lawrence RAFTERY and resided in St. Louis until her death in 1906. What interests me are these coincidences. 1. A LDS listing shows that Catherine (LYONS) RAFTERY was born in 1837 in Ireland. My Catherine LYONS was born in Ireland in 1837-38. 2. A number of the postings on Ancestry.com and elsewhere suggest that many members of the RAFTERY family came to the U.S. from Co. Roscommon, Ireland through New York and New England and scattered. My Catherine LYONS emigrated with her family to New York from Co. Roscommon, Ireland in 1839 and moved to Massachusetts in 1845. After the 1850 census she disappears. So where did she go? St Louis maybe? I have good information that suggests her father and mother split. Her father moved to Indiana in 1852. Maybe she went with him. Catherine was still a toddler when she came to America but her parents might have been acquainted with the RAFTERY family, especially if they both came from Co. Roscommon. Certainly a name such as Catherine LYONS is common among the Irish but this is the only one I've found with a similar birth year and place of birth. Like I said, it is only a possibility but it is one that I have been trying to research. If I could review Catherine RAFTERY's May 26, 1906 obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, it might show the names of her parents as James and Catharine LYONS. Granted I could write the St. Louis city clerk but I hate to spend money on a copy of a death certificate that is immaterial to my research. I appreciate you contacting me with your information. Thanks.

Do you know for certain that city hospitals address was 2331 Olive St. I know he died at city hospital, and the record I found said an Edward Shaw died in 1901 at 2331 Olive St. I was doing some reading last night about city hospital. Sounds like in many cases it was for the destitute. I'm wondering if he was estranged from his family. Anyway, I couldn't find anyplace where it said the hospital was on Olive St. Are you pretty sure it was. Thanks Dennis

Elizabeth (Vars) Maxson was born in 1802 in Westerly, RI and died in 1820 in Petersburg, NY, I found a card with Mrs. E. Maxon 2920 Olive St. St. Louis, MO. That would be Joseph Stillman Maxson's mother was Lois Stillman; maiden name Lois Stillman. Lois was a daughter of Joseph and Mary Molly (Maxson) Stillman. Lois had a daughter-in-law named Mrs. Joseph Stillman Maxson whose maiden name was Elizabeth Vars. This is the woman whose card I found with the St. Louis address (2920 Olive Street) on it. Elizabeth and Joseph Stillman (Vars) Maxson had a daughter Abigail Maxon who was a genealogist. Abigail's son Fred Saunders married Fannie Sommer. Fannie was born in 1864 and brought to this country when she was 6 months old from Weinheim, Germany. Any of these families in your book? Ambrose Sommer was head of household for Frannie. Fred Saunders was head of household for Abigail Maxon. Sommers were Catholic. For the Maxson group they came from Westerly, RI to Adams or Petersburg, NY before being in St. Louis. From St. Louis the clan moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sommers moved in about 1875. I don't know date of moving for Maxsons. Sommers originated from Weiheim, Germany and resided in the German area of St. Louis. Fannie's mother did not learn much English.
