I tried various spelling of her last name and then got smart and just did a first name lookup and then went to the L's for her last name; nothing was listed for her there. Possibly she moved to another state before her death - maybe to live with a child or another relative. Or she may have died in Missouri after 1957 (the online death certs stop at that date). Try contacting the St. Louis City Public Library; their obit lookups are very cheap. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/obit.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi 'Nanerth' Any change was prior to 1933. My best guess is that Hanley ended at Olive at some point in time. Mt. Vernon is the four block extension that *was Hanley Rd. prior to the extension south from Olive St. that did not follow the same N > S pathway. Good hunting Gary Stoltman Mercerville, NJ P.S. The abandoned church fascinates me and I was wondering if there had been a cemetary. The old Wesleyan might have been a possibility, as it would have been less than 1/4 mile away. The Wesleyan Cemetary was on the southeast corner of what is now Hanley/Olive. There is a grocery store on the site called "Pete's Shur Save" - on a side note, many of the employees at this store are extremely rude and crabby; wonder if working atop an old burial ground has anything to do with it? YIKES! LOL! The Chillicothe Constitution Tribune: 05/22/1952 "Peer Into Caskets at Bodies Preserved Nearly 100 Years" St. Louis, May 22 (UP) - An old cemetary has yielded up a number of bodies preserved for nearly a century in cast iron caskets. About 30 of the iron caskets, with windows of heavy glass through which faces can be seen have been found in the removal of several thousand bodies from the Wesleyan Cemetery in suburban University City, to a new site. In one of them was a child, dead for 97 years, her blonde hair still perfectly parted and the face marred only by a few puckers. In another was a middle-aged man with a Van Dyke beard, his waxed moustache still precisely arched. The removal of the bodies to Memorial Park Cemetary in Normandy, was undertaken (oh dear - was this a bad choice of wording, or what???) by the Wesleyan Cemetary Association, which is without funds for perpetucal care of the old cemetary. (NewspaperArchive.com) I hope this information helps. Nancy Jefferson City Post-Tribune: 11/25/52 "Huge Shopping Center Proposed for Suburb" St. Louis UP - A huge shopping center to be constructed at a cost of more than three million dollars, was proposed last night before the suburban University City council. The center, to include 24 shops, a supermarket, business offices and off-street parking facilities for 425 cars, would be constructed on a 9 1/2 acre tract formerly occupied by the old Wesleyan Cemetary. St. Louis, Jan. 1. -- Every day is to be a New Year's day in the calendar of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph ALTMAN, who were married yesterday morning just as the bells throughout the city were chiming forth their greeting to a new year. Miss Sadie LASKER, daughter of Rabbi M. L. LASKER, and Joseph ALTMAN of Pine Bluff, Ark., chose that hour for the beginning of their married life and incidentally they formulated a set of New Year's resolutions which are designed to make their life a perpetual joy. The agreement of the young couple never may be set aside by either on the ground of failure of consideration, as the New Year's obligations they assumed in addition to the marriage contract are based on mutual promises. The bride resolves: I will never nag my husband. I shall try to make myself useful to him in every way. I shall never meddle in his business affairs. The husband resolves: I shall not talk to my wife when I am angry. She shall have her own bank account. She shall run the house; I my business. I shall not concern myself with her political beliefs. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
