That would have made George 12 years old when John was born. There is a John DeCosta in the Missouri online death records who was born March 10, 1909 and died 14 January 1957, son of Fred DeCosta and Catherine Fay according to the death certificate. http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/ There is also a Fred Decosta's death (26 November 1921) there with wife's name as Kate DeCosta. YOu can download the two death certificates. You can get Fred's obit from the St. Louis Public LIbrary for a small fee. You can email them from the following website. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm The 1900 census shows a Fred DeCosta with wife named Kate Irene (not sure about the middle name). They have been married 10 years and she had 5 children, 2 of whom are still living-Fred born Sept. 1890 and George born Sep. 1898. The 1920 census shows a George DeCosta with wife named Louise-no children enumerated with them. I don't think that Fred Costa would be a stretch if the census taker thought that the "de" was for the middle initial of the person's name. They had 3 children: Thomas (1918), Fredrick Charles (b. 1921 d.1988), George (b.1922). I know Anna is the daughter of Mathilda (Priesmeyer) and Daniel Schneider. Mathilda was the daughter of Anna (Gaus) and William H. Priesmeyer. If anyone has leads on the Wilson branch of this tree, I would appreciate it! I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as the family of James A. KINCAID which was taken at the W. C. Perkins Studio in Washington, Missouri. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1860's or 1870's with James and his wife appearing to be in their 30's or 40's and four children ranging in age from about 5 - 12 years old at the time. It appears to be a 3 older boys and the youngest a girl. Based on limited research I was able to gather some information regarding the family as follows: James Andrew KINCAID was b. 1833 in White Sulphur Springs, VA to parents John KINCAID (b. 1802/1804 in Greenbrier, VA) and Elizabeth GILLESPIE (b. abt 1806 in VA). James married Mary Rebecca MCCALLISTER (b. 1836 in MO) on 23 Aug 1855 in Franklin Co., MO. The couple had 4 children including, John Thomas; James William; Charles F.; and Mary Virginia E. KINCAID all born in Greenbrier, VA between 1830 and 1848. James died 22 Oct 1915 in Franklin Co., MO and is buried there in the McCallister Cemetery in St. John Township, MO. In some records he is recorded as Andrew James KINCAID. Mary Rebecca MCCALLISTER b. 1836 in Washington, MO to parents Thomas M. Hi, Gary, thanks for the response to my Horstkotte/Horstkotter/Harstkotte question. But your reply brings me to another question then: Would the guy's NAME have been simply "Horst" with the "kotter" part added on to designate the geographic/property aspect of his landholdings once he got to the US? In other words, I've never been able to figure out where they came FROM, so perhaps he arrived in the US simply as a "Horst" and not as a "Horstkotte" which is what I've been using so far?? (By the way, the A stands for Auguste as far as I can tell.) Any thoughts or leads gratefully appreciated and welcomed. (But I'm going on vacation for a week....so you won't hear back from me for a while if you do give me info!) Hi Sue There were two Horskotter's (A. and William) who were founding members of the North St. Louis Chorus which was originated in 1856. They participated in the North American Saengerbunds (singing clubs) and German festivals. There was a listing for Hortskotter William, blacksmith, Ws. 16th b. I urge you to donate it to professionals in St. Louis; a historical records division or library--some place where it can be scanned in its entirety and the information made available to the public while the original is kept in a safe environment. The wrong temperature, humidity and/or light are stealth enemies to old books, especially those from the era you mention. You see, after the turn of the century as the industrial revolution gained momentum, paper became cheap and plentiful, more information could be published faster and at less cost, which explains how a church could afford 'pictorial yearbooks' for all its parishioners. The yearbook must be kept in a suitable environment and its pages scanned so handling can be kept to a minimum. I hope I've been of some help to you in caring for your treasure by bringing these facts to your attention. -Best Regards, Ed Lewis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
