    3. HI Bill, I am happy to hear the Grotto is still alive and well. I thought when they closed Gravois it was disbanded. I think I had told you my parents were very active in the Grand and Magnolia Grotto in the 30's and 40's. I really believe that Harry Reed (probably father) was active at the same time. I think Meridian was his :Lodge. I think Otto Hippenmeyer might have been the Monarch in the 30's. Are there Grotto archives of activities from past years? If anybody is ever looking for material I have some. 2. Ann, Another reason you may find is that during WWI many families altered the way they spelled their surname was to make it look more American and less German. I went to one of the SSN Death Index sites and typed in HIPPENM* and came up with; 21 listings, HIPPENMEIER, 3 from Florida, all lived in Tampa HIPPENMEYER, 5 applied in Illinois, 3 were living in the Chicago area, one was living in Granger Indiana. HIPPENMEYER, 7 from Wisconsin, at time of death three were living in Waukesha, WI; three in Stoughton, WI, San Rafael, CA HIPPENMEYER, 1 form Minnesota HIPPENMEYER, 1 listed as living in the State of Missouri, 3 were last living in St. Louis and one in Pacific Palsades, CA; These 5 applied for their SSN in Missouri The persons from ST. Louis area: OTTO HIPPENMEYER 27 May 1881 - Nov 1970, I would suspect this is your person of interest, you can order a death certificate HARRY HIPPENMEYER, 28 Sep 1899 - May 1973 HARRY J. HIPPENMEYER, 4 Sep 1926 - 26 Jul 1997 I find a Harry J. Hippenmeyer living at 418 E. Argonne Dr., St. Louis, MO 63122-4524; (314) 821-4522 A Harry J. HIppenmeyer was buried at Sts. Peter & Paul Cem. on 3 Nov 1999. You might check with the St. Louis Public Library and ask them to search their obit files, there is a minimal charge if they find it. Between 1913 & 1955 there are 5 Hippenmeyer deaths listed on the Missouri State Archives. 1. Re: [MOSTLOUI] Hip's Fashion Shop
    2. Hello Ann - If I may, I'd like to clarify your mention of various spellings for the same family name. That was very common, and in some cases still is, in that one family of say, six sons, spells the same surname 6 different ways, or 4 different ways in one document for the same person. There was no single "correct" way to spell much of anything until around 1875-1900, because there were no rules, so we genealogists just collect them as they are, not as we in the 21st Century think they should be. You may also run into Hibbenmeyer (the b and p sound the same in German) or Hippenmaier, or Hippenmyer or even Hippenmaher or Hibbermeyer. You may also see chopped versions (Hippe, Hippen, or Meyer, Mäer, etc.) The sound is far more important for your research. In the early days, certain census enumerators were not permitted (!) to ask someone how to spell his name, so as not to embarrass anyone who was not literate - this, on top of a gazillion different Germanic dialects and some poor kid who knew only basic English just trying to do his job for $2.50 a week and getting yelled at by sometimes frightened immigrants (what does the GOVERNMENT want?) 3. Hi, I really shouldn't jump in here after that excellent post by my good friend, Maureen, because I have very sparse info for you. I went to Washington University with one Tom Hippenmeyer in 1950 who dated a friend of mine. I believe he lived later in life in California. He had a cousin, Bill Beardsley, who attended Westminster College in the same time period. I remember an Otto Hippenmeyer who was active in the Masonic Lodge and the Alhambra Grotto in the 30's and 40's. The Grotto is no longer active. Otto might have been a member of Meridian Lodge which is located: 4500 Donovan Ave St Louis, MO 63109 (314) 353-7705 If Otto wasn't a member there perhaps they can guide you to the correct Lodge. I think Bill is still living, and his mother might have been Edna Hippenmeyer. Tom's father might have been Harry. Again, a long time ago and I didn't know them that well. However there is one who was reportedly in the US with whom I have had no luck other than the mention of her first name and location. In Liba's 1932/3 immigration papers at a hearing in San Francisco, CA, she states she has a sister, Rose, married and living in St. Louis (where most of the relatives lived before coming California). Of course neither Rose's married name nor address were provided. So this is the only reference I have for such a sibling. The birth years I have for her sibling range from about 1872 to 1894. It is possible she married prior to coming to the US. I have been informed of two Roses listed in the 1930 St. Louis census: Rose BAKER and Rose O(/A)RENSTEIN. From the funeral home I have learned Rose BAKER's maiden name was STEIN. And there is an MO State Archives reference indicating the second Rose was THALER. I make this post primarily for archival purposes. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Possibly George's mother since she was also in Cook County at the time of her death. Have you found the family on a 1930 census at all? I found a Catherine, widowed, living with her son-in-law Charles Barnum in Illinois. Found George and Louise living in Chicago with George's brother John who is 21 years old. The census shows that George and Louise are 37 years old and their age at first marriage was 25. So, they have been married 12 years but also enumerated with them is someone who is listed as "son" but with a different last name (first name is Leroy) and who is 18 years old. That is strange but there are other enumerations on this page that don't make sense relationship wise. There are children listed as sons to other head of households but with different last names. And the marriage age and the difference between their current age doesn't agree with the ages of the so called children of the head of household.
