    1. [MOSTLOUI] St. Louis County Library
    2. Bobbie
    3. I was wondering if I am the only one who had noticed that if you get a microfilm via Interlibrary Loan you must go to the main branch of the St. Louis County Library as all the microfilm machines have been removed from the branches. I used to use the Florissant Valley branch to view microfilms but now I have to drive all the way to S Lindbergh to do so. I was told when I asked why they could not put the non printing, manual microfilm machines at some of the other libraries other than the main branch. There are several of these machines at the main branch that are seldom used. Below is the response I got when I made this suggestion. Since I live in Florissant and am on limited disability, I find this to be a great inconvenience. Am I the only one who finds this to be an inconvience? Bobbie "Thank you for submitting a suggestion form to the St. Louis County Library regarding access to a microfilm reader at the Florissant Valley Branch.  I am sorry that the microfilm reader/printer is no longer available at the Florissant Valley Branch.  I certainly understand that it is inconvenient for you to travel to Headquarters to  access the machines there.  Microfilm usage at all branches dropped significantly over the past decade as electronic resources replaced much of the information that was available on microfilm and microfiche."  "Florissant Valley was the last branch in North County to eliminate the microfilm reader/printer.  Its usage had declined to nearly nothing.  A few individuals, like yourself, used the machine to view and/or print information from films that were sent through inter-library loan.  As you recognized, these machines are prone to breaking down, therefore, we must maintain service agreements in order to keep them in working condition.  Due to the cost of such repairs, and the declining usage, a decision has been made to consolidate microfilm readers into Headquarters where they receive much heavier use and are more in demand.    Even simple reader machines that do not have printing capabilities still require repair and take up a significant amount of space in the branch.  Due to these factors we are unable to replace the microfilm reader at the Florissant Valley Branch.  I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause." "You already know that Headquarters houses several microfilm readers.  You may not be aware that we offers several subscription-based databases for genealogy research.  The following link provides information about these valuable resources.  http://www.slcl.org/databases/genealogy.htm  Many of these databases can be accessed through a home computer with Internet access." "Please let me know if I may be of further assistance.  Thank you for your patronage."   "Sincerely, "Eric Button "Regional Branch Administrator" "Eric Button "Regional Branch Administrator "St. Louis County Library "Florissant Valley Branch "195 New Florissant Rd. 3. Hi Bobbie,   I was at the Headquarters doing some research and overheard a group of people (employees?  I don't know) talking about the microfilms there and at the local LDS genealogy church.    You probably know that the LDS is scanning their microfilm records and putting them online.  Eventually the microfilm machines will not be needed, so they are not repairing theirs and have started to remove them as they break down.  Some of their facilities have closed due to decreased usage as more and more people go online at home.   As technology advances things change, sometimes not to our liking.  The county library was also doing inventory of the VCR tapes they have; they will be put out for sale (the employees didn't know when) to the public.  DVDs are their replacements.  I remember when they got rid of their stereo records and cassette tapes too.  I was so sad at the time as I couldn't afford a CD player.   If this will make you feel a little better, I volunteer to do lookups for you when I go to the headquarters (I try to go every other week).  Just be sure to email me directly as sometimes I get overwhelmed with email and delete anything that isn't personal, so I might miss your request if you put it on the list.   Now, before you start planning for that new computer or laptop, take a look at this site: http://361degrees.wordpress.com/2006/10/22/amazing-technology-from-japan-but-can-you-guess-what-it-is/   Cathy Champion in Fenton, MO  (St. Louis)   http://spittingnickels.blogspot.com/             “Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat.” ~   Robert A Heinlein --- On Tue, 8/26/08, Bobbie <[email protected]> wrote: I was wondering if I am the only one who had noticed that if you get a microfilm via Interlibrary Loan you must go to the main branch of the St. Louis County Library as all the microfilm machines have been removed from the branches.

Collins and Ann being in St. Louis at the same time as Patrick F., may have known each other ?. Paul J. Ryder, born in St.Louis MO, ~1854-5, I have this date because recorded on my Grandfather's birth, father Paul J. Ryder aged 28 years old, on Dec 3, 1882. Patrick F. would have been about 54-5 years old if Paul J. was his son; that seems a bit old for me for a man of that time to have children ?. This is why I started to think Grandson !. Paul J.'s father (unknown), I could believe was born in Dublin Ireland as well, and came with Patrick F. to the USA, then in 1854-5 Paul J. was born. I feel now these dates fit better. I hope to find what happen to Paul J., knowing more about his past may help ?. Patrick F. Ryder, is as far as I care to go back in the past, I feel the name (Ryder) for my father started with Patrick F. Ryder in the USA and I'm good with that. The other information as on Ann etc, is just soooo great to learn about people I never would have guessed. Learning more about them has already been fun, I hope to find more in time, and I can't stop, and not thank all for the help given here. I'd like to take you up on your generous offer. I'm looking for details on my g-g-Grandpa: Frank Gilk. He came to St. Louis around 1880. I don't think it is the same family. While my ancestor had a brother, William Francis Carr, the time frame is different. All I have is the name William Carr and that he was an attorney. He is listed as the father of My aunt, who was born 1899, St. Louis, MO. But I have never actaully found her birth or Baptism Record. There was a more famous Carr family in St. Louis at that time, and attorneys, but the Wm Carr is that family was not married. Of course, he could still be a father.....but couldn't prove it. On my aunts school records and some other records, her father is listed as Wm Carr Attorney. Of course I am assuming he was from St. Louis. Most of my family are of early French Connections.
