It would only be helpful if the birth parents had very unusual surnames. There were about 40 males born on my son's birthday in the whole state. Many of the names were too common, i.e. Jefferson, Green, Smith, etc. BUT, you could get lucky if the parents you are researching had an unusual name. Unfortunately, it is a chance you take. I remember that they had a fire but do not know how bad it was. I think it closed down after the fire. By 1977 it had moved out to Olive Blvd. west of Hwy 270. I believe it is now Barnes West Hospital. There was also several other hospitals on Kingshighway. Namely Depaul, Jewish, Barnes and Faith. Depaul & Faith moved to the County and Jewish was bought by Barnes but are still on Highshighway. Good Luck. Charlie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am not certain about the exact link but I contacted them about 10 years ago for my son who we adopted in 1971. They sent me forms for my son to fill out and send back to them. They keep these forms and will share info when both the child and one of the birth parents registers. You can also request a list of all births in MO for the date you are looking for. It cost me $28.00 and I got a list of about 75 births for my son's birth date. I ignored the girls and attempted to research all of the males. Unfortunately, no location is given. All births were registered without any identifying info for this list. My son was given to us by Catholic Charities. At that time, they would have given my son's irth parents the info that he was looking for them and they would make the choice of whether they wanted to be found. He would have to pay $300 and go to counseling before they would even see if his birth parents were alive still or able to be found. You can contact the county court in the county that the adoption was finalized and they will send you non-identifying info. I got the name of the doctor who delivered him and he is still a doctor but is unable, by law, to give me any information. My son was born at Firmin DesLoges Hospital which is still in existence but under newer ownership and a different name. I was told they had the records for 1971 in storage, but I would not be able to see them. They are not considered public records. Good luck, Bobbie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. All she knows is that she was born in a hospital on Kingshighway that burned down and the records were lost (at least that is what she was told). Her birth date (as she knows it) is September 8, 1969. Any information would be appreciated. Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Re adoption: Having moved away from Missouri long ago, I do not know if any major hospitals have burned down, but I rather doubt that story, perhaps just a ruse to keep her from looking. There was St. John's Hospital on Kingshighway too, now moved out around Ballas Road, between Manchester and Clayton Roads. The hospital's records from 1969 are likely long destroyed by now, as well as the attending doctor's records. When a baby is adopted, there are two birth certificates; one is issued at birth with a least the birthmother's name and age and address and possibly the birthfather's info too, and that is filed with the State of Missouri. The second certificate, supposedly with the same birthdate, is later issued with the adoptive parents' names at the time the court finalizes the adoption, also on file with the State. You can try asking for these under the Freedom of Information Act - but unfortunately, Missouri is one of those states which seals adoption records, and requires a court order to open them. And of course, you will need the mother's name. Also, check all the local papers of September 1969 and see if by chance a girl's birth is listed in one of them. This was often suppressed by the birthmother - or her family - who wanted to keep it all secret. If this were an unwed mother, perhaps she stayed at a home for the unwed. Perhaps she came from another state. Perhaps she was coerced, perhaps not. Perhaps she will welcome you now, perhaps not. Do not ever give up! Put an ad and/or a story in some local papers, with a photo. Someone may well recognize the family likeness. Also, ask the St. Louis Genealogical Society if you might put a query in their newsletter. Seek all the publicity you can get. Get on line with the many adoptive search agencies, including Triadoption. Do not EVER give up! I do not know of any hospital on Kingshighway in my memory that burned down. I can think of two hospitals on N .Kingshighway that have closed since the birth date you mention. There was DePaul Hospital in probably the 2300 to 2800 block of N. Kingshighway. That structure is now a nursing home or retirement place. DePaul Hospital is now in Bridgeton. The other since closed hospital was Faith Hospital. However, it's now situated on Olive Street Road and called Barnes -West. There are, of course, many hospitals farther south on Kingshighway near Forest Park in the Barnes-Jewish cluster, but I never heard of any of them having a serious fire. I tried Google before, but didn't come up with much. Maybe I wasn't using the right word combinations. I will do as you suggested. Daniel's first wife was a Christianne Haller, whom he married sometime in the 1830s and had several children. Perhaps Christianne died, and Mary became the stepmother to Mattie and her older sister Ruth. Still trying to link Mattie to Daniel as his daughter. Will also check the Find a Grave site.. I found a Daniel Colgan listed on the 1860 census for Shelby co. KY. Also checked familysearch.org for Daniel and found him and Mary with their children. They must have left KY after 1847 for Missouri. It shows Mattie's brother born 1847 in Marion, Kentucky, and she was born 1848 in Missouri, as was her sister Ruth. As for her father Daniel, my theory is after Mattie's death her parents got divorced and he moved back to Kentucky. Also found Daniel at Familysearch.org married to another woman, named Christy Ann. There are pictures of their tombstones at Ancestry.com At any rate, this is wonderful information, and I really appreciate your help.
