FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, November 21, 1901 FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE COLUMBIA A young man named Lee Barnes, in the employ of the Columbia Lead Co., was killed last Friday morning by falling from the mouth to the bottom of "Red Onion" shaft, a distance of about 500 feet. He was just stepping on the cage to descend, and missing his footing fell between it and the walls of the shaft. His body was badly mangled. His home was in Reynolds county and he was only about nineteen years of age.
