FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, December 17, 1915 KILLED BY FALLING ROCK _________ John Payne Meets With Death In Doe Run Shaft No. 9 _________ John Payne of Flat River, an under ground worker of the Doe Run Lead Company, was crushed so that he died from his injuries by a falling roof or rock in Doe Run Shaft No. 9 (old Onion shaft) last Friday. Mr. Payne was a young man about 34 or 35 years old, of upright Christian character and was highly respected by his fellow workmen and all who knew him. He said just before dying that he did not want to die, but that he was prepared to meet his fate. He leaves a wife and four or five children who have the sympathy of many friends in their sore bereavement and this great sorrow which has come so early into their lives.
