Ms. Warner, I personally apologize to you and the list if I have caused any rancor among your constituents. My intentions were purely honorable. All I wanted to do was try and convey that the St. Francois Co. web site is for true genealogical information to be exchanged and disseminated in a harmonious way. Sometimes good intentions run amuck. Sorry. If I was guilty of referencing the web site for facts it was not intended. I was merely trying to point out that the web site was a place where one interested in Sam Hildebrand could read what has been written about him in the past and close to current for the time. I think you made good points about both sides of the law and the War Between the States (i.e. Civil War, War of Rebellion, War for Southern Independence etc.) being of a different era and what seems right and wrong to us today is not necessarily how people in both the north and south felt like circa the early 1860s. Thank you for adding your insight and wisdom to a discussion that got overheated and out of genealogical bounds. You do great work as the St. Francois Co., Mo. List Administrator. Thank you for your great work, tireless effort and making the web site the best site that I visit during the course of my genealogical research. Kudos. Nathaniel Samuel "Sam" Hill p.s. I did read where you said "Also, AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, if you want to just say "Thank You" or some similar two or three word post, please do it off-line, not on the list!" and I felt like my comments were more than that and it was appropriate for them to be posted on the web site. ----- Original Message ----- From: B. A perfect example of this is the "Life and Times of Constable Sam Doss" [another notorious "Sam"] on our website (link below). http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mostfran/sam_doss_murder.htm Sam Doss went from the wrong side of the law in St. Francois County to being elected Constable of Randolph Township to enforce the law and, in the process, became one of the most legendary lawmen in St. Francois County's history, although how he chose to administer the law would not be the proper way in today's standards! This former owner of a saloon and gambling hall proceeded to wage a fierce war on the bootleggers and moonshiners of St. Francois County (many of whom were former close associates of his so he knew how they operated) and, because of this, he ended up going to meet his "maker" in a very ironic way - this bad guy turned lawman was killed by two guys allegedly hired by Bright Eyes Boesel (the unofficial "Kingpin" of the Bootleggers in St. Francois) and Deputy Sheriff Bart Walker who both ended up being sentenced to prison for the deed. This other "Sam" led a very colorful life indeed!
