    3. Alice, You are so correct - it was a short trip! A perfect example of this is the "Life and Times of Constable Sam Doss" [another notorious "Sam"] on our website (link below). http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mostfran/sam_doss_murder.htm Sam Doss went from the wrong side of the law in St. Francois County to being elected Constable of Randolph Township to enforce the law and, in the process, became one of the most legendary lawmen in St. Francois County's history, although how he chose to administer the law would not be the proper way in today's standards! This former owner of a saloon and gambling hall proceeded to wage a fierce war on the bootleggers and moonshiners of St. Francois County (many of whom were former close associates of his so he knew how they operated) and, because of this, he ended up going to meet his "maker" in a very ironic way - this bad guy turned lawman was killed by two guys allegedly hired by Bright Eyes Boesel (the unofficial "Kingpin" of the Bootleggers in St. Francois) and Deputy Sheriff Bart Walker who both ended up being sentenced to prison for the deed. This other "Sam" led a very colorful life indeed!
