Celebrating the glory days - By M.LAWSON Daily Journal Staff Writer. Published Monday, June 7, 2010 Farmington alumni are planning a Golden Celebration to honor 50 years of Farmington Homecoming. All former football players, cheerleaders, pommies, twirlers, color guard and band members are invited to participate in the parade of decades. Everyone will begin gathering about 6 p.m. Sept. 24 [2010] at the southeast end of the track. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. The pre-1960s football players are also invited to participate in the parade and be recognized. The oldest football player will be recognized before the game. The class of football players in the fall of 1960 will also be the honorary captains for the game. During half-time the homecoming queen from 1960 will hand flowers to the new queen and the retiring queen will hand over the crown. All former homecoming queens will begin gathering at the beginning of the second quarter. After the homecoming game a reception is being planned for all former alumni who want to attend. The all-class get-together will be held immediately following the homecoming game. A "parade of decades," led by the Black Knight Marching Band, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the track. There will be an alumni band that performs at pre-game. Former band members and boosters can also join the band in the stands during the game. The BKMB will perform their competition show post-game. Any former band member needing to borrow a school instrument can contact Kurt Bauche at Farmington High School at 573-701-1310. Participants should RSVP by Sept. 20. The person in charge for their class reunion for each class needs to contact Pat Burns at the high school for reserve seating at the game. Tours will be provided Sept. 25 [2010] from 10 a.m. until noon at the high school. Burns also said there will be an alumni volleyball game held Oct. 9 [2010] at the high school. Plans are still being made, and if you wish to participate in the volleyball game contact Burns at pburns@farmington.k12.mo.us, Courtnie Pothetos Burns at erleml@hotmail.com, or Lori Sprenkel at lsprenkel@farmington.k12.mo.us. The class of 1960 was the first to graduate from the existing Farmington High School building and 1960 was also the first year of homecoming as it is celebrated today. The class of 1960 was the last class for the school carnival celebration. At that time the carnival was held as homecoming and a queen was named during the carnival festivities. Also planned for the weekend is a celebration to honor the classes before homecoming 1960 in Farmington. Janet Douglas and a group of about 15 are planning a carnival similar to ones before homecoming. The carnival will be held at Truman Auditorium in Farmington.
