(George/Mandy?) Thank you for this information on the Joseph Hughes family! Every detail helps and this rules out one of the possibilities. I will also check Reynolds County as you suggested. If the name is really Ida Hughes, and not Addie, and her birth year is really 1882, then she will not appear in any census prior to 1900, but if anyone is able to check the George/Mandy Hughes family in the 1900 census, I'd like to know if the below Addie is listed in her parents' household. If so, this would also rule her out as being the same individual as Ida Hughes found in the 1900 Dosing/Boatwright-Trapp Census. The birth year (1880) varies by 2 years from Ida Hughes, born 1882, but this Addie Hughes, who was the daughter of George/Mandy Hughes is the closest I've found so far: 1870 Iron Co. Railroad shops at Bonne Terre, committed suicide last Monday evening by taking carbolic acid. About three o'clock Monday afternoon he went into Romine's saloon and asked for paper and pencil, and receiving these passed on to a rear ware room. No further attention was paid to him until between eight and nine o'clock some one noticed a man lying in the ware room, and thinking he was asleep started to wake him up, when it was found that the man was Slade and that he was dead. Dr. J. H. English, County Coroner, was notified, and he went to Bonne Terre and held an inquest over the body Tuesday. A note which Slade had written to his wife was found, and from this it was inferred that he had had some trouble with her, as in the note he said he was sorry she "was mad at him," which was repeated twice, and hoped that she would forgive him; and he also named one of the children and said he hoped that he [sic] would be good to her [sic] mother. Slade was in the habit of imbibing at times, but was not considered a hard drinker, and witnesses testified that he had been drinking some when he entered the saloon, but was not much intoxicated, just enough to tell that he had been drinking. After taking the carbolic acid he recorked the bottle and replaced it in one of his pockets, where it was found. He leaves a wife and six children. The verdict of the Coroner's jury was suicide by carbolic acid. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MOSTFRAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MOSTFRAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

The two were arrested on February 15th, by Constable John Mostiller of Bonne Terre, after he had identified two tires on their machines as being those taken from Thomas Nash, who lives on the old Desloge-Bonne Terre road, on the night of January 31st. 2. Marge and Barbara, Thank you very much for your replies. I can see that the surname for Mrs. Mandy [George] Hughes was recorded incorrectly. It should be Boatwright/Boatright. This is definitely the same George/Mandy Hughes in the below 1870 & 1880 census records. Barbara, do you know when your Ida married Marion Arthur Hughes? Was it prior to 1900? If so, perhaps FORD is a new surname I need to do some snooping around for. I hadn't considered that she may have been married. Since I no longer have access to ancestry, I'm can't go back to double check what her married status was. I thought I recalled that she was listed as single, however - for whatever that's worth on a census record (-: Do you also happen to have her parent's names? Thanks again! 1. [MOSTFRAN] Law Tighens Up on Violators (1927)
    2. B. Warner
    3. THE LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, MO, July 1, 1927. TIGHTENS UP ON LAW VIOLATORS. Several Arrests Made During the Past Week on Various Law Violations. During the past two weeks or more prosecuting attorney, E.V. Abernathy, has been more than busy conducting raids on various establishments with the aid of the sheriff, his deputies and other officers. Last week Boyd Yarbrough, Otis Easter, Luther Jennings and Walter Politte were fined $25 and costs each on charges of gambling brought in Justice Herod's court in Bonne Terre. Curtis Berry and William Pullen appealed from Judge Tyler's Bonne Terre court on charges of assault with intent to kill. Ed Greenwood was fined $100 and sentenced to thirty days in jail in Judge Lucy's court at Bismarck on a charge of illegal possession of liquor. Frank Williams, a colored man of Farmington, also received a thirty day sentence in Judge Zolman's court on the same charge. These cases were reported to the News last week, but were overlooked due to illness and absence in our front office. During the past week activity has continued with good results. Tuesday night Sheriff Watts, deputies London, McCabe and prosecuting attorney Abernathy raided the premises of Jesse Woods on the George Tetley place on the Knob Lick road, and secured 44 pints of alleged home brew. Woods was arrested and released on $500 bond. Monday night the same men conducted a raid on the premises of W. C. Davis, Gofftown, and secured sixty pints of brew and six gallons of mash. Davis was arrested. Tuesday two boys were arrested in Bismarck when two gallons of whisky was found in their possession. The lads were taken to Farmington, where they arranged for bond, but they stated that they would plead guilty to the charges against them. Neither of the boys had ever been in serious trouble before, hence the News is not publishing their names. Quite a few complications have grown out of a raid conducted in Elvins last Saturday on the premises of Del Lively when officers Black, Moyer and Boswell found liquor on the premises. As a result of this raid the Lively woman, accompanied by the officers, went to Otto Behrbaum's place with a view of getting him to sign a bond for her. According to the officers, Behrbaum advanced upon them in a threatening manner and, after cursing them, flashed a revolver. Moyer struck him and knocked him down and in the fight which followed Behrbaum suffered serious injuries. His face is badly bruised and he has several broken ribs with a possible injury to his lungs. The officers all tell the same story about the affair, but Behrbaum has a different version. He states that when the party drove up to his gate he advised the woman to keep quiet until they could go to court and settle the details, and that, without further provocation or warning, he was struck and knocked down and that he was kicked several times while down. Prosecuting Attorney Abernathy was busy investigating the case Wednesday of this week. Several witnesses corroborate both stories of the affair, thence the News is unable to say which is accurate.

    2. Melanie Rickmar
    3. LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, February 10, 1939 DORIS JUNE FREEMAN Doris June Freeman, youngest child and only daughter of Wm. J. and Zelpha McGuire Freeman, was born in Flat River, Mo., July 2, 1926 and passed away at her home there Monday night, Feb. 6, 1939 at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 4 days, following an illness of several days. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Flat River First Christian Church by Rev. L. W. Weston, pastor. Pallbearers were chosen to include cousins of the deceased, and flower girls, who bore the many beautiful blossoms proffered by sorrowing friends and loved ones, were friends and playmates of Doris June. Interment was in Woodlawn cemetery under the direction of Caldwell Bros. Service. Doris June was possessed of a rare charm and a lovable personality and was an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact. Her thoughts were ever of others, and it was she who gave more of joy to those about her than it was possible for her to have received. She was the Sunshine of her own home and of the homes linked to hers by the ties of friendship and of love. Since babyhood she had been endowed with an astounding knowledge of God and His infinite mercy and wisdom; and it is with sweet consolation that we realize that she is now a happy part of the Sweet Beyond. She was a talented child, being advanced beyond her tender years in her studies and was possessed of a remarkable musical ability and appreciation, which talent made more happy her short stay upon this earth. Friends had she, old and young, who with her own loved ones shall keep forever sweet memories of little life [sic], her smile and her love. Doris June is survived by her parents and a brother, Meredith, other relatives and many friends. We extend our sincerest sympathy to the bereaved.

    3. THE LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, Missouri, Friday, Jan. 28, 1927. ARTHUR WHITE HURT IN FALL IN PIT. Arthur White, a member of the pipe fitters' gang of National Lead Company, St. Francois, received painful burns about the hands, arms, feet and legs, Tuesday of this week when he slipped from a scaffold and fell into a pit of hot water near the power house. He was taken to St. Louis immediately, where he was placed in St. Luke's Hospital for treatment. While exceedingly painful, his injuries are not considered dangerous. The pit is one into which the sluiceway* from the boiler room discharges, and the water it contained registered about 140 degrees. White was employed on a scaffold above the pit and near the edge when he lost his balance in some manner and fell, slipping into the hot water. When he reached the hospital in St. Louis he was able to walk and help himself considerably, and surgeons hope for a speedy recovery. *A sluiceway is a man-made channel designed to re-direct excess water.
