    1. [MOSTFRAN] Death of Gene Sutherland (1916)
    2. Melanie Rickmar
    3. FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, March 10, 1916 DEATH OF A GOOD NEGRO Gene Sutherland, colored, who for many years has been a valuable and trusted employe in Jacob Helber's Hardware establishment, died Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock at his home in this city. Gene's death is mourned by all who knew him, as he was one of those splendid negroes, now becoming altogether too rare, who knew his place and apparently had no desire to work out of it. Certain it is that he never indicated any desire to force himself on anyone. He was loved and respected by all who knew him at his real worth, and his employer would as soon place Gene as guard over his money box as he would anyone else in his employ. He was indeed a credit and an honor to his race. Peace to his ashes.

    1. [MOSTFRAN] C. V. Seger's "Blowing" Well Foretells Storms (1916)
    2. Melanie Rickmar
    3. FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, March 17, 1916 "BLOWING" WELL FORETELLS STORMS C. V. Seger of near Blackwell, one of the county's well-known and most substantial citizens, was a caller at The Times office Tuesday and had his name enrolled among The Times' readers. In the course of conversation we discovered that Mr. Seger has a phenominal well on his place. In appearance it is like the ordinary wells to be found on so many farms, though a little deeper than the average, being about 130 feet deep. But this well is a regular weather barometer and foretells a storm with perfect accuracy. He calls it a "blowing" well from the fact that at times it emits a blowing sound like wind passing through a tunnel, and this blowing sound is the sure pressage of a storm of rain, snow or wind. Sometimes the "blowing" will continue for a couple of days, and a two-days' storm is sure to follow. When he left home last Monday it was a beautiful, bright, balmy day, and his wife told him that he better get back before Tuesday night, for the well was "blowing" and there would be a storm. He was here Tuesday afternoon, and sure enough the storm was on, cold, disagreeable and snowy. Who can account for this phenomenon?

    1. Re: [MOSTFRAN] Another miner obituary
    2. Cynthia McDaniel
    3. Were you posting deaths of all miners or just those who were killed in the mine? I couldn't tell because there are retirees as well. My husband's grandfather does not fit in any of these categories since he died at home but he was, or had been, a mining captain. He is John William McDaniel, b. 1879. I think that Bettye may have originally listed his obituary in 2000: JOHN McDANIEL - Found Dead Author: B W Date: 1 Oct 2000 12:00 PM GMT Surnames: McDaniel Classification: Obituary [St. Francois County Record, Elvins, Missouri, Friday, September 1, 1916] FOUND DEAD Just as the Record goes to press news is received of the death of John McDaniel, supposedly from heart failure, at his home in Gofftown. According to report, McDaniel arose at his usual early hour, went to the toilet and here he was later found dead. This was between 5 and 6 o'clock this (Friday) morning. The deceased was well known in the mining district here, having formerly been a mining captain with the Federal Lead Co., but was lately engaged as underground contractor at shaft No. 1. He had been complaining for several days prior to his death, although he had worked on Thursday. The deceased leaves a wife and four children, besides a father, mother and several brothers and sisters besides a number of other near relatives to mourn his untimely death. Funeral services will be held Sunday at Parkview Cemetery near Farmington, under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias, of which order the deceased was a member. Cynthia McDaniel
