Wow, talk about confusing! I have family buried at Woodlawn. The paper work says Woodlawn. Never heard it called Oaklawn. Beverly For example, Washington National Airport is now Ronald Regan Washington National Airport (as of 1998). Just as Regan is still called Washington National by locals, it may be that Woodlawn is called that but that its official name is Oaklawn as of 1944. It seems to me that is the case from the information collected by GNIS. GNIS says Oaklawn is a variant: Woodlawn Cemetery

He leaves to mourn his going his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin House, two brothers, Donald, 3 and James, 6 months, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank House, all of Germany, Mo., and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Newcomer of Bonne Terre. Ragsdale and Mrs. A. O. Jackson of Bonne Terre. The little body was laid to rest in Germany cemetery. The News extends sympathy.
I have used GNIS for some time. It is my experience that they list places not only with current names but variations on the names that have been used in the past as well. This is useful for genealogists because places may not be called the same thing now as they were in the past. For example, Washington National Airport is now Ronald Regan Washington National Airport (as of 1998). Just as Regan is still called Washington National by locals, it may be that Woodlawn is called that but that its official name is Oaklawn as of 1944. It seems to me that is the case from the information collected by GNIS. GNIS says Oaklawn is a variant: Woodlawn Cemetery Citation Ramsay Place-Name Card Collection. A collection of approximately 32,000 place names on filing cards. Three sets exits: one at USGS-GNIS in Reston, Virginia; one in the Western Historical Manuscripts Collection at the University of Missouri-Columbia; one in the State Historical Society of Missouri at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The last set was used for Phase II compilation because it was organized by counties. Names were collected by students writing theses during the period 1929 to 1945. The date on the Phase II entry refers to the year of completion of the thesis that covered a given county. The Woodlawn Cemetery was given to the City of Leadington in 1965. I have newspaper articles and have found obits going back into the early 1920s it was called Woodlawn Cemetery then too. Greetings: I believe we may have traded email earlier this year. I am believed to be descended from Shadrack Green (Jr). and his son, Marvel. If memory serves, Marvel and family--including my GGGrandmother (his daughter, Malinda), came to St. Francois County at some point in the mid 1800s from North Carolina. Other than a mention in the 1870 St. Francois County Census, it is my understanding that no other information can be found on Malinda in her later life. I would love to trade information with anyone who may shed some light on this family. Recently, I have seen a mention of Libertyville in a Green writing but I cannot recall exactly from where. I am trying to find out more info on Hope Alexander. Here is what I have so far: 1819 - James Henderson married circa 1819 to Hopy whose maiden name may have been Alexander. She was born in 1800 in either N. or S. Carolina. James & Hopy eventually had 6 children: Jane, *Mary Ann (my 3rd great grandmother who married her cousin John Henderson, Jr., ) Samuel S. (who went to Oregon), Corbin A., Nancy and Eleanor. There was a Corbin Alexander in St. Francois County & I believe Corbin A. Henderson is named after him. The Alexander family settled in Farmington - in the 1850 census for St. Francois County James Henderson is living next door to an Alexander Family. The LDS Ancestral File gives Hope Alexander as wife of John Henderson but I believe this is incorrect as I believe that she was the wife of John's brother James Henderson, Jr. Census & deed records give James' wife's name as Hopy & I have proven that John's wife was Elizabeth Wilson. If anyone can help with the Alexander family it would be very much appreciated. Esther http://carrollscorner.net/HendersonJames.htm

YOU WROTE OF A SHERIFF WATTS. THIS WAS ABOUT 1924 THE SHERIFF RACE BETWEEN H.B. (BUD) WATTS AND SAM DOSS OF DESLOGE,MO. BUD WATTS WAS SUCCESSFUL IN HIS ELECTION AGAINST DOSS. FOR YOUR INFORMATION DOSS WAS MURDERED TWO YEARS AFTER BUD WATTS ELECTION TO OFFICE. DOSS WAS SHOT IN HIS HOME AT DESLOGE IN THE FALL OF 1926. WATTS CHIEF DEPUTY WAS TAKING PAY-OFFS FROM BOOT-LEGGER'S SO THEY COULD HIDE THEIR STILLS WHEN REVENUERS CAME CALLING ON THE COUNTY. SHERIFF WATTS CHIEF DEPUTY WAS SENT TO PRISON ALONG WITH A MAN NAMED BOESEL. THEY PAID TO HAVE DOSS MURDERED. SHERIFF H.B.(BUD) WAS A ONE TERM SHERIFF. IN NEXT ELECTION A MAN BY THE NAME OF ROY PRESNELL WAS ELECTED (MY GREAT UNCLE). RESPECTFULLY RETIRED DEPUTY AL TURLEY
