FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, June 20, 1912 ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE AT FLAT RIVER Last Tuesday Richard D. Brown shot and severely wounded his wife at Flat River and then turned the weapon on himself, placing it against the right side of his head just above the ear and discharged it, the ball entering his brain. He died in about ten or fifteen minutes. Brown and his wife, though young -- he it is said being only about 24 years of age -- had been married eight years. Last Friday they separated, she going to the home of her brother, Silas Wright. Tuesday Brown went to Wright's and tried to induce his wife to come back to him, and on her refusal he drew a pistol and shot her three times, the shots taking effect in her neck and shoulder, and then shot himself. Dr. T. L. Haney, who was called in to see the wife, says her condition is very serious, but there is hope of her recovery. They have one child, a little boy about four years old. Dr. English was notified of the tragedy and went to Flat River and held an inquest Tuesday night.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, October 21, 1909 ONE DEAD; TWO WOUNDED ____________ As Result of Shooting Bout at the Spider Saloon in Leadwood Last Monday ____________ A shooting scrape occurred at the Spider saloon at Leadwood on last Monday evening in which Norman Benham, James Shoemaker, Deputy Sheriff and Deputy Constable, Wm. Black, the bartender, James Wells and Fred Brown seem to have been mixed up. The result was, Benham was shot three times, once through the body, the ball entering his back and lodging near the navel, from the effects of which he died early Wednesday morning; Black was shot through the arm, and Deputy Shoemaker received several slight wounds, one a scalp wound just back of the left ear, a flesh wound in the back and one in the leg. Benham was under arrest for petit larceny, his trial was set for that day, and Deputy Sheriff Shoemaker had gotten the subpoenas to serve on the witnesses, when the case was continued. Shoemaker, Benham and Wells then went over to the Spider saloon. While there Benham asked Fred Brown to loan him a dollar, to which Brown replied that he didn't have it. Benham told him he was a ----- liar, and a row was imminent. Black, the bartender, here interfered, when Shoemaker stepped between him and Benham, his back to the latter. At this juncture, it is claimed by Shoemaker, Benham jerked his (Shoemaker's) gun from his pocket and leveled it at Black over Shoemaker's shoulder, when Shoemaker turned and grabbed Benham, who was a large and muscular man, and endeavored to wrench the gun from him, when it was discharged, the ball passing through the rim of his hat and just grazing his head. Shoemaker continued to wrestle with Benham, hustling him out of the door, while Black was shooting at Benham. Here things became so mixed up that it is hard to tell particulars, but the result is as stated above.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, November 21, 1901 FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE COLUMBIA A young man named Lee Barnes, in the employ of the Columbia Lead Co., was killed last Friday morning by falling from the mouth to the bottom of "Red Onion" shaft, a distance of about 500 feet. He was just stepping on the cage to descend, and missing his footing fell between it and the walls of the shaft. His body was badly mangled. His home was in Reynolds county and he was only about nineteen years of age.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, February 24, 1910 MEMORIAL In memory of little Harlan Leslie Byington. On the 14th day of this February, 1910, the death angel entered and stole from the loving embrace of fond parents their darling baby Harlan and bore him to the land where the lovely belongs. He was an angel sent from heaven to stir the fountain of a mother's deathless love. Though only seven short months did he linger with us, his little grave has cast a deep shadow over their home. No one can imagine the feelings of a mother but those who have had the portals of the grave suddenly closed between them and their baby. Wherever she goes she will see something that will remind her of Harlan, yet amid all her grief it will certainly be sweet to know she is the mother of an angel. The Savior said, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God, and He took them into His arms, and laying His hands upon them blessed them." Then weep on fond friends, for little Harlan is safe in the arms of Jesus. The sweet little flower was plucked from earth, has been transplanted in the eternal city of our Lord, where it will bloom in immortal glory. Grieve not with hopeless sorrow, Jesus has felt your pain, He did thy lamb but borrow, He'll give him back again. L. D.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, April 27, 1899 CRUSHED TO DEATH BETWEEN TWO CARS Last Thursday morning Henry Aberle, an employe of the St. Joseph Lead Company, was crushed to death between two mineral cars. The Bonne Terre Democrat-Register gives the following account of the deplorable accident: In attempting to set the brakes of a mineral car in the basement of the mill, where same are loaded, instead of getting into the car to perform the task he remained on the ground, walking backward as the car moved forward, and seemingly unmindful of a second car near by. Companions shouted a warning, but he paid no attention to their cries, and in a moment was crushed between the two drawheads of the cars. Death was almost instantaneous, for though fellow workmen immediately rushed to his assistance and extricated him from between the cars, life was already extinct. Deceased had been a resident of Bonne Terre for many years, and his term of service as an employe of the company covered a period of about 17 years. He was always faithful to duty and as a citizen was generally esteemed and respected. He was 53 years of age and leaves a wife and six children.
Thank you Alanna, for answering me. Gosh, for some reason, I thought you lived in Missouri. I just moved up here over Labor Day weekend, and took over a 40 unit apartment complex as a Resident Manager on September. I had been living in Kingsburg (just south of Fresno), since September 2006, after moving back to California from Oregon. I was hoping that you would be able to make a connection between the Conway family that I have and yours. Someday possibly we can tie the two together. I, too, am looking for the Ozark Pioneer Book, as it is supposed to have some of my MASH / NASH Family members listed in it. So if I ever find it I will let you know, please do the same for me. I am sorry to hear about your dogs being sick. I too am a dog lover. I have a little Chi. She is my baby. Well, have a wonderful Happy New Year, and stay in touch. I hope that you will be able to get you computer up and running before long. What is wrong with it? FARMINGTON NEWS, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, January 3, 1930 J. H. SHANNON James Hugh Shannon was born near Farmington, Mo., Oct. 13, 1852, and passed away December 29, 1929, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Susan Spradling, after an illness of several months, aged 77 years, 2 months and 16 days. Mr. Shannon was a member of one of the county's most highly respected and pioneer families. His parents were the late Rev. J. C. and Carolyn Shelly Shannon, who reared a family of twelve on a farm one and one-half miles east of Farmington. The deceased was an honorable, Christian man. In early manhood he united with the M.E. Church at Flat River. For many years he taught in rural schools; later he conducted a general merchandise store in Desloge after which he returned to farming. After the death of a sister, Mrs. Jennie Atterbury, he tenderly cared for an invalid brother, Frank, who passed away about ten years ago. Mr. Shannon was unmarried. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Susan C.Spradling, of Farmington Route One, and three brothers, Dr. I. N. Shannon, of Fredericktown, Dr. Wesley Shannon, of Bonne Terre, and L. C. Shannon, of Flat River. A sister, Mrs. Emma Level, passed away seven months ago. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Ricketts at 11 a.m., Dec. 31st, at the Cozean Funeral Home. Interment was in the Shannon family cemetery.

FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, August 27, 1915 FOREIGNER DIES IN ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL Chas. English of the English & Son Furniture and Undertaking Co. of Flat River, went to St. Louis last Saturday to bring the body of John Evaneschuck, who died there in Dixin Bros. Hospital on South Broadway, back for burial. Evaneschuck was a foreigner who was employed by the Federal Lead Co. at their No. 6 shaft, formerly called Old Central, and some time ago sustained an internal injury by making a heavy lift, which strained him so severely as to cause a painful and dangerous internal injury, and his case proving very critical, he was sent to St. Louis for an operation and treatment. He died there last Saturday morning and the remains will be brought to Flat River and prepared for interment, at the Undertaking establishment of Dr. English & Son.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, August 27, 1915 MRS. A. H. AKERS DIES SUDDENLY Mrs. Alice (Wescoat) Akers, wife of Prof. A. H. Akers (deceased) died at her home in Farmington last Saturday at 10:15 p.m., August 21, of acute pericarditis, just six days after the death of her husband, at the age of 48 years an 20 days. Mrs. Akers had been in poor health for several months past, and the sudden death of Prof. Akers weighed heavily upon her, and after her return from Oran, Wednesday, where she had gone to visit her brother, Dr. W. H. Wescoat, she was confined to her room continuously until death came. Mrs. Akers was a truly devoted wife and mother. She had a refined and lofty conception of the duties imposed upon a mother, and without restriction or reservation discharged them faithfully. The greatest tribute that we can pay is to say: There in Parkview Cemetery sleeps a mother. On the 1st day of September, 1886, Miss Alice Wescoat, daughter of J. W. and Mary Wescoat, was united in marriage to Prof. A. H. Akers (deceased). To this union were born nine children, seven of whom are alive: Supt. J. Clyde, Jessie V., Wilbur D., Waldemar F., Alfred Howard, Christine and Julian. Besides the seven children, Mrs. Akers leaves an aged mother, Mrs. Mary Wescoat; a brother, Dr. W. H. Wescoat, of Oran, and four sisters, Mrs. Matilda Ferguson, Mrs. John Howell, Mrs. Alonzo Overall and Mrs. Mattie Roberts, all of Farmington, and a host of friends to mourn her untimely departure. The funeral was conducted at the home Tuesday at 2 p.m. by Rev. J. M. Bailey. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Among those who attended from Flat River were, Mrs. F. M. Horton, Mrs. B. A. Eaton, Mrs. Henry Rinke, Mrs. C. R. Pratt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Abshier, Mrs. Gus Kinzie, Mrs. Elic Qualls, Miss Irene Mitchell and Miss Nora Perry. The remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in Parkview cemetery. The Times joins an almost unlimited number of sorrowing friends throughout the county in extending sympathy and condolence to the bereaved in this hour of sorrow.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, August 18, 1910 A "KID" PARTY The Alumnae of Elmwood Seminary of '07, '08, '09 and '10 were the recipients of childish little notes about a week ago, asking them to play with Lottie and Dorothy Huff at their "Kid" party, to be given August 15th, and further requested to bring a toy and wear a "Kid" costume. The occasion was a postponed graduating party for Miss Bertha Mitchell, the guests of honor being Mrs. Wm. Harlan, former President of Elmwood, and Mr. Arthur Allen of Drury College, Springfield, Mo. Mrs. Harlan and Miss Huff, attired as nurses, cared for the youthful guests in orthodox fashion, presenting the boys with toys and directing the games, which were in keeping with the occasion. Great amusement was caused by the original and comical costumes and the novel toys, and both hostesses and guests profess themselves as quite delighted with this fashion of "Looking Backward." Those invited were: Mesdames William Harlan and W. R. Taylor, Mr. Arthur Allen, Drury College, Misses Bertha Mitchell and Roberta Tetley, Elmwood '10; Alice Cole, Bess Cover, Ethel Morris, Genevieve Huss, Edna Ware, Isabelle Waide, Ruth Swink, '09; Misses Leanna Cole, Myra Mitchell, Ruth Huff, Ruth Spaugh, '08; Miss Augusta Lawrence, '07; and Messrs. Ferd Turley of Bonne Terre, Taylor Smith, Linn Rariden, Ruffner Lloyd, Carson Wood, Vernon Taylor, Earl Williams, Lee Mitchell, Fred Butterfield, William Blacklege, Philip Pipkin, Raymond Nixon, Harry Dover, Standifer Crowe and Merrifield Huff.
FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Thursday, August 18, 1910 REUNION AT BURKS SCHOOL HOUSE SEPTEMBER 17 The old settlers and patrons of the Burks School in Union township, Ste. Genevieve county, have decided to hold their reunion on Saturday, the 17th day of September. This is one of the oldest and best known schools in that county, and many of the students as well as the teachers in that school have since become our best and foremost citizens in this section of the State, and many of them have made records for themselves in other States. They now once more wish to meet together and renew old acquaintances as well as to see and get in touch with the young folk who are now attendants and patrons of the school. All the students, teachers, patrons, as well as other friends, are invited to be present. The meeting will first be at the old school house site just south of the Henry Horn residence, and from thence they will march north one-fourth mile to the site of the school at the time it was destroyed by fire; and from thence they will adjourn to the present school building where a good old-fashioned lunch will be served, and old-time amusements and sports will be in order. Speeches will be made by Jasper N. Burks and others at the various school house sites. All of the teachers at this school are warned to be there ready with a speech, otherwise they will be treated to an old fashioned ducking. The meeting at the place first designated will be at 10:30. Don't fail to come, it will do you good.
