    1. [MOSTFRAN] G. Walter Parker Readjudicated Sane (1909)
    2. Melanie Rickmar
    3. FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, January 15, 1909 READJUDICATED SANE Mr. G. Walter Parker of Bismarck, this county, formerly of Detroit, Mich., was readjudicated sane and capable of managing his own business affairs by the Probate Court last Tuesday. It will be remembered that some time last July Mr. Parker "took a train" out of St. Louis by proceeding in the Wild West style to "shoot up" the Pullman. He was arrested, but on close examination the Illinois authorities soon discovered that he was beside himself, and consented to allow him to be brought to Farmington, where on the 8th of last August he was adjudged non compos mentis, and his son, G. W. Parker, was appointed guardian of his person and curator of his estate. Mr. Parker, Sr., was sent to State Hospital No. 4, but about the 8th of October was discharged by the Hospital authorities. G. W. Parker made his final settlement as curator in the Probate Court this week, and surrendered to his father all property heretofore held by him as curator.

    3. FARMINGTON TIMES, Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri, Friday, February 5, 1909 YOUTH ACCIDENTALLY KILLS HIS CHUM _____________ Henry Rickner*, aged 17, Shoots and Kills Arthur Berner at Bismarck _____________ Last Wednesday evening about half past seven o'clock, at the residence of G. W. Parker in Bismarck, Henry Rickner, aged about 17 years, accidentally shot and killed Arthur Berner, a lad of about 15 years. From the evidence at the inquest, which was held during the night, it appears that the boys, who were staying at Mr. Parker's, had finished their supper and gone into the front room, leaving the other members of the family in the dining room. Young Rickner was sitting by a table and had the baby on his lap, and young Berner was standing at the table selecting a record to place in the graphophone. Rickner picked up a pistol that was lying on the table and in some way -- he couldn't tell how it was done -- the pistol was discharged, the ball striking young Berner in the breast, inflicting a wound from which he shortly expired. Dr. J. H. Yount of Doe Run, the Coroner, was notified and went at once to Bismarck, arriving there a few hours after the accident occurred. He determined to hold the inquest that night, so he phoned to Farmington for Sheriff London, who arrived at Bismarck about 12 o'clock. A jury was summoned and the inquest proceeded with. The verdict was accidental killing. _____________________________________________________ * This was a mispelling by the newspaper. The last name should be printed Rickmar. 3. Thank you for this info also Barbara. I believe I have most of this info, except for the date of death and the parentage of Louis Courtois (my maternal grandfather). I did not have his date of death, however, there is a family story that his death was accidental. He supposedly was cutting down a tree when it fell prematurely and one of the limbs went through him pinning him to the ground. The story goes on to say that he had recently had his boots re-soled, but when they found him the heels of the boots were severely worn down. Apparently he spent quite some time trying to free himself. Thanks again for your help.Mary Pratt Burk> From: GENENGOLF@aol.com> Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2009 14:15:32 -0500> To: mostfran@rootsweb.com> Subject: [MOSTFRAN] Courtois> > #1> Etienne COURTOIS-1981 was born about 1812 in Missouri, USA. 3. RE: 1850 Census Washington Co, Liberty Twnship -- Family #647 Pleasant Johnson is listed at bottom of page. The following page continues with same family # but the 6 children listed have PRATT surname. Do you think this is an error on the census taker's part? OR, were these children 'adopted' by the Pleasant Johnson family? OR, were they visiting and just became part of the Johnson family due to their physical location at the time the census taker arrived? A Courtois question ... an email from a lister noted that Stephen "Etienne" Courtois was married in 1830's to a Marguerite M. Sansoucie. In the 1880's, it is widely reported that Louis Courtois (my grandfather) was first married to Mary Margaret Agatha Sansoucie, had several children, then he married Julia Rulo (my grandmother) about 1900 and had several more children (Harriet, Richard, Catherine, Elizabeth (my mother). Does anyone know if/how Louis & Stephen were related? I realize a lot of family names are repeated through generations, but does anyone think the near sameness of these wives' names is somewhat questionable? On Family Search 1900 Census, Family #47, Louis Courtois b. Nov 1855, married to Julia Rulo (my grandmother) with 6 children (Ferdinand, Alfred, Frederick, Tresa, Risa?, Amos), and this record states that estimated date of their marriage is 1881. Would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thank you. Mary Pratt BurkRESEARCHING: Pratt, Courtois, Emily, Rulo, Villmer in mostly counties of Ste. Burmese Proverb -----Original Message----- From: mostfran-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mostfran-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Esther M. Ziock Carroll Sent: Saturday, January 24, 2009 2:27 PM To: mostfran@rootsweb.com Subject: [MOSTFRAN] History of Carleton College The story of Farmington's Carleton College begins & ends with the life of Eliza Ann Carleton - she founded the school in 1854 &, shortly after she died in 1915, it's doors closed forever. Carleton was born in 1826 in Montgomery Co., Va. & moved with her father to St. Francois County in 1839. Her own formal education was limited - she had only 24 months of schooling at age 17 - but it is said that on her own she memorized Latin grammar in nine weeks. In 1845, at age 19, Carleton began teaching a "subscription school" where students paid $2 in cash or $3 in trade in exchange for her instruction. At the same time, she began studying Latin & Greek under the principal of the Farmington School. With the help & encouragement of the principal, Carleton was she first woman to ever be accepted at the Methodist College of Arcadia. Her admission was contingent upon her being able to keep up with the men & college officials felt her college career would be short. But four years later she not only graduated, she was she valedictorian of the Class of 1854. The same year, she founded a school with 30 students in a hickory log cabin just north of Farmington. Carleton later built a frame building in Farmington &, as her "seminary" continued to grow, Carleton College was granted a university charter by special act of the Missouri General Assembly in 1859. In 1898 she built the stately three story brick building with tree-lined walks that became a Farmington landmark. As would be expected, the school was strong on traditional academics, but it also stressed athletics & its football team defeated St. Louis University. In May 1916, eight months after Carle! ton died, the college closed - its teacher gone & its mission taken over by public schools. 3. The story of Farmington's Carleton College begins & ends with the life of Eliza Ann Carleton - she founded the school in 1854 &, shortly after she died in 1915, it's doors closed forever. 3. Thank you for the beautiful story!!!  My kin on my mother's side were interested in education and I have some stories about them and education, so that is why I loved it.  Plus I love to hear of what happened in the past where my mother's kin lived and worked.   Alanna
