    2. They did not always file a death certificate in that time frame. Especially if he died at home without a doctor attending. Are there funeral home records available. That is how I found my gggrandfather. He did not have a death certificate or headstone but I found his funeral bill and plot number at Boyer's. 1. [MOSTFRAN] Walter Sohn Found in Prison Camp (1945)
    2. B. Warner
    3. The Star News Register, Bonne Terre, Missouri. Thursday, August 30, 1945. BONNE TERRE MAN FOUND IN NORTHERN JAP PRISON CAMP. Corp. Wilfred H. Sohn, 24, son of James R. Sohn of Bonne Terre, has been found alive in a Japanese prison camp in Machuria. His father had had no communication from him since December 4, 1941. The telegram received by Mr. Sohn Tuesday morning read: "Washington 8/28/45. The secretary of war desires me to inform you that your son's name, Corp. Wilfred H. Sohn, appears on a list of Personnel Camp Hoten Mukden Machuria dated August 26 received from the American Camp Commander. As further information is received you will be informed. Edward F. Witsell, Acrting for the Adj. General of the Army." Corp. Sohn, "Toots" as he was known to his family and friends, has been in service since he was 19, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was a plane mechanic in a crew of a Flying Fortress. He attended high school two years in Bonne Terre but graduated from Farmington High School. He was trained in Sacramento, Cal., and was in the Philippines at the time of the Pearl Harbor disaster. During his service time, he trained for an airplane pilot and received his pilot's license before being shipped to the Phillippines. Mr. Sohn had a telegram after the fall of Bataan and Corrigidor that told him that his son was "missing in action". Later he received an official letter stating that Corp. Sohn was a prisoner of the Japs in Manila. Mr. Sohn and his daughter, Miss Elizabeth Sohn of Houston, Texas, wrote letters and sent packages to Corp. Sohn, but received no answers. About two years ago, Mr. Sohn had a governmental communique giving him the name of Camp Hoten Mukden, Machuria, as the location of his son. He wrote faithfully and sent packages of warm clothing and food, but never has received any indication that his son knew of his efforts to reach him. Camp Hoten Mukden, Machuria, is the place where General Wainwright was found. "Toots" Sohn was under Wainwright's command. His father and sister are anxiously awaiting further promised word of Corp. Sohn's condition. They are hopeful that he may be able to be returned to the states soon, after being held prisoner of the Japs for more than three and a half years. According to recent news reports, General Wainwright and the men found with him have been moved to Chungking, China. Many of the prisoners had to be hospitalized there. Those able to travel are to be brought by plane to the U.S.A. in the near future. Miss Elizabeth Sohn has never given up hope for the safe return of her brother. Mr. Sohn is owner of the Wall Street Barber Shop in Bonne Terre. The entire town rejoices with him in the finding of his son. [Note: According to Mr. Sohn's obituary, he was born in Ironton, MO, March 22, 1921, and was killed Wednesday, January 11, 1956, when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an automobile in El Paso, TX. On May 29, 1946, he was united in marriage to Miss Francis Briggs of Denver, Colorado. His wife and three children survived him. Other survivors were his father and two sisters. At the time of his death he was employed at the Post Office in El Paso, TX. Military burial services were conducted by a Lowry Air Force Base Squad at Ft. Logan National Cemetery at Denver, Colorado.]

    1. [MOSTFRAN] Sudden Death of Josephine Ringer (1945)
    2. B. Warner
    3. The Star News Register, Bonne Terre, Missouri. Thursday, August 30, 1945. SUDDEN DEATH IS INVESTIGATED HERE. Mrs. John Ringer Dies After Family Scuffle. Mrs. Josephine Ringer, 68, of Bonne Terre, Route Two, died about 7:30 o'clock Tuesday evening, August 28th at her home in Moontown. Her death was "due to heart trouble caused by excitement," according to a coroner's jury, at the inquest of her death held at Benham's Undertaking Parlor Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock. According to testimony given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ringer and Willard Ringer, as well as neighbors, James Pyeatt and "Grandma" Easter, a marital battle between Eli White and his wife, Mrs. Ada White, daughter of Mrs. Ringer, was the indirect cause of Mrs. Ringer's fatal fall Tuesday evening. All of the witnesses called by Prosecuting Attorney W. E. Coffer and his assistant, K. C. Weber testified that Mrs. Ringer had a bruise on her face, which they seemed to believe must have been caused when she fell. They seemed to think that she hit her head on the newel post of the stairway as she fell. Dr. F. Welebir was brought to the Ringer home immediately by Willard Ringer. He pronounced Mrs. Ringer dead. He had been her physician for almost a year and had repeatedly warned her family of her chronic heart condition. It was understood from the testimony brought out at the inquest, that the Whites, who lived upstairs in the Ringer home, were always fighting. During the abuse of his wife, Tuesday evening, it is believed that Eli White cut his hand as his fist hit a door pane, breaking the glass. He is reported to have grabbed an icepick and started for his wife when Mrs. Ringer chose to interfere for her daughter. Somehow in the scuffle, Mrs. Ringer fell. No one seemed to be able to recount the actual happenings, although, according to the testimonies, Ada White's screams had summoned Mr. Pyeatt, a neighbor, and his brothers from next door. "Grandma" Easter was at the Ringer home visiting. Eli White was arrested Tuesday evening on North Division Street by Deputy Sheriff Arthur Miller and confined to the county jail at Farmington. According to Prosecuting Attorney Coffer a charge of manslaughter has been filed against him. A preliminary hearing will be held in Bonne Terre within a few days.

    3. Bettye - I have quite a few relatives buried in Parkview. But, I think you knew that - the Dickey's, Doss', Clubb's, Alexander's, Rickard's, etc. - even my parents tombstone is there but, thankfully, they are still alive. There is one lady that already made a listing of most of the cemeteries around St. Francois Cty - can't think of her name - you know her - don't think she takes pictures though. Hope you are doing well - haven't seen you for awhile. Jan Scott Sent from my iPhone On Aug 26, 2010, at 1:43 PM, "B. 3. Have you found Andrew's death certificate for 1917. I have searched the file and could not locate it. I am wondering if perhaps there was a misspelling of the name, although I searched for the date and did not seem to find it that way either. 3. Ruth Thank you for doing that - I sent for the death cert 2 or 3 different time, and they didn't have one on file for him. I checked for Wallis and a couple other spellings, but none was found. Would it be listed in the county records? Seems to me like I checked with them too, but it has been a long time. Must have been mis-filed at the time it happened. I have these two postings from the newspaper, but never found an obit: Potosi Journal: Potosi, MO-Wednesday, April 11, 1917: "Irondale: - Mr. Andrew Wallace, a veteran of the Civil War, died Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lee Province, of the place. He was ninety years of age. "Weekly Independent" Potosi, MO - Thursday, April 12, 1917: W. Wallace died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Lee Province Friday last, after suffering from burns which he received several weeks ago, when his house burned. He was laid to rest in the Big River Cemetery. 3. Donald I don't have a photo of his grave site, just the reading I found on line. I imagine too, that Frances is probably buried in the same cemetery. Their daughter Alice Wallace Province had a veterans marker put on his grave, I believe. You sound like you are very busy transcribing - that is a big undertaking. I live in Alton, IL. My mother was born in Irondale. Thanks for your response. My computer has been down over a week and am just back up 08/13 pm!!! I have found some of what you have posted already, but was not sure if the information was correct or not. Christell was my grandmother's younger sister. My mother who was one of the last children of my grandmother, thought that Christell had died around the age of 18. In my mother's photo album that she had received from either her mother or far older sister and I would guess from her mother, there are pictures of James, Christell, baby, and Aunt Margie. I need to get rid of 1K emails plus new ones coming in. So, I will get back to you off the list, but give me some time, PLEASE!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! Alanna From: n sam hill <nsamhill@charter.net> Subject: Re: [MOSTFRAN] James Vance & Christell Calahan To: mostfran@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 10, 2010, 9:05 AM I think the following person is who you are looking far but I cannot give you 100% assurance but it may point you in the right direction. It is possible that James Vance was born circa 1869 in Crawford Co., Mo. to Elijah Vance (1833-1911) of. Va. or W.V. and Mary Elizabeth Harman (circa 1836/1840-????) of Va. or W.V and his name on the 1870 census is "Joshua Vance." By 1880, "Joshua" is now called "James K." Vance and he is living with his parents and siblings in Washington Co., Mo. I am not sure where "Joshua i.e. James K." Vance is in 1900 but by 1901 he is married and living in St. Francois Co., Mo. James Vance married Christell L. Calahan on 4/14/1903 at "Mr. Liars Calahan" house in St. Francois Co., Mo. It is possible that Christell died prior to 1906 because I think that James Vance married Frankie Kirby of Leadwood on 4/11/1906 at Flat River, Mo. St. Francois Co. He is now called "James J. Vance." James J. Vance and Frances (Francis) Kirby Vance lived in St. Francois Co., Mo. for the 1910 and 1920 censuses. It appears that they had 3 children before 1920 while they lived there - Durwood (1909), Kirby (1912), and Ruby (1915) Vance. By 1930, the Vance family had moved to Hutchinson Co., Tx. The 1930 census shows that Frances is a widow and head of the household. Living with her are Durwood, Kirby, Ruby and Geneva (1923) Vance. Geneva was born in Mo. so the Vance family evidently moved to Texas between 1923-1930. I found no other information except that Elijah Vance is buried in the Shirley Union Church Cemetery in Washington Co., Mo. If I can be of further assistance, just drop a not here on the website and we can go off-line if needed to continue the investigation of the Vance family. By the way, Elizah Vance was first married to Mary Elizabeth Harman but he also married Rosa Belle Stinson on 9/25/1897 in Washington Co., Mo. ----- Original Message ----- From: Alanna L Scanlon To: mostfran@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 04, 2010 7:54 PM Subject: Re: [MOSTFRAN] Brian Oster's Early Marriage Website Thank you. I tried it and looked up my Janes [38] Vance and Christell [>18] Calahan who married in 1901. Still cannot find them any more than that. I know they had a child, male or female, do not know. Wiil try bc, but my grandfather who was wealthy then did not register births, so they may not have done so either. Anyone know of these Vances'? Alanna
