Judy - That makes more sense, thank you! The grounds were well kept, but the poor older graves were not in good condition. I even picked up a few of them and propped them up, so they were at least, not laying on the ground. Maybe some day I will go back and try to wipe down some of them that "might" be able to be read, but I know you have to be careful how you do that. Maybe Bettye will help me with that. I think my Mother's cousin said, that she believed there was a back section that the poor were allowed to have, without payment. Now that I think about it, there are 2 sections and the one further away from the main traffic, does look like really old tombstones and are definitely separate from the others. There are some old ones and new ones up front, but, like you said, they most likely could afford to pay for their own. Good to hear that you are related to one of the persons there. I tried to get as much information as I could, in case somebody on the list, was looking for a name. Thanks again! Jan Scott In a message dated 10/2/2010 11:09:47 A.M. Hi Jan, If I remember right, way back a few years (at least 10 years ago) when I was looking for my dad's 2 sisters, I called the Cozean Funeral Home and they explained to me that the records for this cemetery was lost when there was a fire at the old Miller Funeral Home in Farmington. They also said, that the County,,,,,,and in all their wisdom......used a bush hog to clean up the cemetery.....That is why so many of those headstones are laying flat on the ground and some imbedded in the ground.....so there are no old records of who or where anyone is buried....except to do what you did and right down the headstones that are located in the cemetery.....With that said, unless those headstones were knocked off their base and fell right there, we don't even know if that person is buried with that headstone......When I found the headstone for Arvil Dickey (A. J. Dickey) it too was laying over, face down in some yucca plants. I cleaned it up and placed it back in there (this is towards the back of the cemetery along the parking lot almost middle in the cemetery) I didn't see his name on your list and I know his headstone was there in August....I try to go back there to check on it about 4 times a year, I'll go back either tomorrow or Monday on my way to work to check on his headstone. I know Thelma was the one who said that Ruby & Lula were buried in the same cemtery as Arvil Dickey. I also know that if a cemetery is "Non-Endowed" that meant the family had to take care of that area.....Knights of Pythias was that way back in the 60's.....I can remember going up there with my Dad and brother and we had the push mower & clipper to clean up around my grandpa's headstone. I think they became "endowed" when Cozean took over that cemetery. Karen & Glenn In search of my mother's garden, I found my own..... Genevieve Ave.) - then to the side of the sign, it says - "Non Endowed Cemetery" - I wasn't sure what that meant, so I looked it up on the internet. This is what I found: _SENATE BILL NO. 495_ (http://www.senate.state.mo.us/96info/bltext/intro/SB495.htm) : [(24)] (25) "Nonendowed care cemetery", or "nonendowed cemetery", a cemetery or a section of a cemetery for which no endowed care fund has been established in accordance with sections 214.270 to 214.410; Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 214 Cemeteries Section 214.370 August 28, 2009 Nonendowed cemetery to post signs and give notice of its character. 214.370. 1. Every operator of a nonendowed cemetery shall comply with the provisions of this section. 2. Every person subject to this section shall post in a conspicuous place in every office where sales of burial space in a nonendowed cemetery are conducted, a legible sign stating, "This is a nonendowed cemetery." The lettering of this sign shall be of suitable size so it is easily read at a distance of fifty feet. 3. Every person subject to this section shall also have printed or stamped at the head of all contracts, deeds, statements, letterheads, and advertising material, used in any connection with the sale of burial space in a nonendowed cemetery, the statement: "This is a nonendowed cemetery." in lettering equivalent to a minimum of ten point number two black type, and shall not sell any lot or interment space therein unless and until the purchaser thereof is informed that the cemetery is a nonendowed cemetery. _________________________________________________________________ So, am I reading this correctly? It is a cemetery that is not supported?? Supported by whom? Does that mean that the people buried there could not afford to pay for their plot or funeral? My mother says she knew the one Dr. that is buried there and he was not poor. Guess I am confused! Bettye, is the St. Francios cemetery, the one you say you have the list for - the Farmington IOOF Cemetery (are they one in the same)? Did the IOOF, give you a copy of this list - just curious how you find the list of this cemetery. (I have a listing for the Farmington IOOF Cemetery. The graves you mention are not on the list, however, there is a listing for a Helen Mae Dickey, born and died in 1914, daughter of Phillip L. & Mary Jane (Coffel) Dickey. Listing indicates there is no tombstone.) Regardless, I did do one thing, while I was there - I wrote down the names (what I could read), from each tombstone. (there were quite a few that just had a small stone w/no name and some were so old, you couldn't read them. I heard that there are some of them that are sunken in the ground and no tombstones. I did see a few sunken places, so who knows?) But, below is the list - there is no guarantee that I am spelling some of them correctly - like I said, most of them were very hard to read. I thought maybe somebody on the list, may be looking for a particular name. I still do not know if my mother's sister is buried here, as we are pretty sure she didn't have a tombstone to begin with. That was my thinking too. That there would be no perpetual care in a nonendowed cemetery. My grandparents were very poor so when my gr. uncle died they wouldn't have been able to pay anything. I don't think there was even an official funeral. Never heard anybody speak of one. Esther M. Bettye & Karen - We called my mother's cousin, Thelma (Dickey) Bohs. Karen has visited her & received much family information. Thelma is 94 years old & can tell us our whole family history! She said the Farmington Cemetery & St. Francois Cnty cemetery, should be the same -just that they sometimes split one cemetery as the back side was for those that couldn't afford a cemetery plot. So she believes they are the same. My mother & I are taking a ride now to the cemetery. Will get back with you all soon with more info- Jan Scott Sent from my iPhone On Oct 1, 2010, at 12:19 AM, "B. Mike, The old McKee-Highley Cemetery is located on State Street in Desloge, Mo. A cousin and I, Ron Highley, are working to preserve what is left of the old Cemetery and what few stones remain, although most have been moved and do not sit in the correct place any longer. With the help of some of the folks in the community, we will work to correct some of the issues. There have been several articles in the Daily Journal in St. Francois County regarding our efforts and another one is due to come out soon. Half of the Cemetery has been destroyed and a business has covered it with a driveway. Truly a sad situation. I have copies of the plat, the newspaper articles, the tombstones that remain and a picture of William Madison Highley, who is buried there. If yu are interested, let me know and I will forward those off line unless anyone else has an interest. If you have looked at the Find A Grave website, you will find the Cemetery and some of those that we know are buried there. Are you related to either of those families? Yeah, they certainly could be the same. I have quite a few Saint Francois county cemeteries I am trying to pinpoint the location for. Many I have listings for (taken from the web), but I don't have a location. One is Ortenville Cemetery. Hi Jan, I have the same death certificate, I am at work but I think her just states she is buried "St. Francois Co.". Arvil has a headstone at that cemetery (in some Yucca's) and there is no headstone for Ruby or Lula (my dad's 2 sisters; Clint & Elizabeth's daughters) Let me know what you find out from what your mom remembers; tell them "Happy Anniversary" for me & Glenn take care Karen & Glenn In search of my mother's garden, I found my own..... Helen Mae Dickey's death certificate is there and I printed it off. But, I couldn't find it when I typed her middle name as Mae, which, as far as I ever knew, that was how it was spelled. When I just searched for Helen Dickey, it came up with Helen May Dickey and that is how they wrote it on the death certificate too. I'll have to show that to my mother or her sister or maybe even one of my other cousins, later today and see what they say. Or maybe Karen Kleinberg knows too. Bettye and Jan, Looks as if both of you are busy, busy. I looked at Helen's Death Certificate, and it says Place of Burial or Removal: St. Francois Co. I agree with Jan, you both need to go looking at Cemeteries again. Your good at that, I can vouch for both of you. Jan, give your Parents my Blessings on their 66th Anniversary today.
