STE. GENEVIEVE HERALD, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, Saturday, Jan. 16, 1886. TERRIBLE ACCIDENT TO AN OLD LADY. Mrs. Wakeman Kellar, who lives near Coffman, Ste. Genevieve Co., met with a terrible accident last Tuesday morning, 5th. As she opened the door leading into the kitchen, a loaded gun resting on a rack over the door fell, and was discharged. It was heavily loaded with turkey shot, and the charge passed through the door, thence through one of Mrs. Kellar's ankles, literally tearing it to pieces, and thence on out through the weatherboarding of the kitchen. The ankle was so badly shattered and lacerated that amputation was necessary. Dr. Madison of Libertyville and Dr. Frank. L. Keith of this place were called to attend to the case, and successfully performed the operation of amputation Tuesday evening. Mrs. Kellar is [in] the neighborhood of sixty years of age, which, together with the severe shock to her system, renders her case quite critical.--Farmington Times.
