Ste. Genevieve Herald, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, Saturday, March 13, 1886. --- By request, the Globe-Democrat's correspondents have reported the names of the six-wealthiest farmers in each county in the State, their estimated wealth, assessed valuation, taxes paid in 1885, in what their wealth consists, and how it was gained. Here is what the Ste. Genevieve correspondent reported: Ste. Genevieve county was organized in 1812; has an area of 440 square miles; assessed valuation for State purposes, $2,074,880. Its wealthiest farmers are: 1. John COFFMAN, of Coffman P. O.; estimated wealth, $150,000; assessed for $17,500; taxes paid, $130.30; owns land in this and other counties and live stock; inherited most of his property from his father, but lost all which was placed in the 150 slaves he owned at that time; increased his wealth largely by raising wheat and tobacco; engaged now in farming and stock-raising; Virginian; fifty-three years in county; Democrat; has served as County Judge. 2. Francis KREILICH, of St. Mary's; estimated wealth, $150,000; assessed at $8,365; taxes, $122.40; owns a farm in Ste. Genevieve, several farms in Illinois and Government bonds; wealth has been accumulated by increase in the value of land; commenced as a market gardener; made a profitable sale of coal land near Belleville, Ill.; he was born in France; came to Ste. Genevieve three years ago; Democrat. 3. Louis ZIEGLER, of Ste. Genevieve Township; estimated wealth, $25,000; assessed at $7,815; taxes, $114.90; owns lands and stock; started poor, and accumulated wealth by industry; native of county; Democrat. 4. Daniel KREITLER, of Staabtown, Beauvais Township; estimated wealth, $25,000; assessed at $5,350; taxes, $63.85; wealth chiefly in land; made his money farming; German; twenty-five years in county; Democrat. 5. Bernard BAUMAN, of Ste. Genevieve Township; estimated wealth, $20,000; assessed at $5,?98; taxes $61.15; made his money by farming; German; thirty years in county; Democrat. 6. Ignatius ROTH, of Ste. Genevieve Township; estimated wealth, $15,000; assessed at $7,375; taxes paid $94.80; wealth in lands, accumulated by farming; forty years in county; German; Democrat. The roads are generally dirt roads, but many of them are laid along gravel beds; a spirit of improvement is abroad and roads are being bettered; very fair as a whole. In Perry county the estimation is: Vincent CISSELL, $20,000; Andr. [Andrew ?] HUBER, $20,000; John LORENZ, $18,000; John A. HUGHEY, $15,000; Simon S. TUCKER, $15,000; George T. TUCKER, $10,000. We have seen no report from St. Francois County.
