My darling, there is a link that death cannot sever, you live in my heart now and forever. They were very sweet people. Annie made many beautful pieces of lace - both tating and crochet. My parents and they became good friends as well as neighbors. When George fell ill, I think cancer - I am not sure but I think that was the diagnosis - anyway, he called my Dad over to his house and asked him to look out for Annie after his death. My Dad, Jean Landreth, knew that Annie and George had raised a boy - I don’t know if he was adobted or if they just raised him. Anyway, he was not very attentive to them, but my Dad was reluctant to agree to the request and asked why the boy would not be the logical one to see that Annie was taken care of. George was adament and Dad told him he would do his best to see that Annie had care, but he really did not want to commit to being responsible for her. He said he would do what any good neighbor would do. A few days after George’s funeral, Annie called my Dad and asked him to come over. When he arrived she was dressed in her best Sunday clothes and said she had an appointment with the attorney and she wanted to appoint my Dad her guardian. So my Dad and Mother became responsible for her care and finances. They made annual reports to Judge Hoteling in Linneus, Mo. One morning, my Mother found Annie lying on the floor by her bed. She had fallen during the night and had been unable to get up. My folks took Annie into their home. When Annie got to the point that my Mother could not physically take care of Annie, they had to put her in a nursing home in Marceline. It became necessary to sell her home and possessions to help pay for her care. Mother could not sell Annie’s bible. While in the nursing home, Annie fell and broke her hip. My folks had her taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City and had a specialist. Annie never walked confidently after that besides the anesthesia left Annie mentally impaired. However, she lived several years after that and my Mother went to see her every day that she was in town - (my folks were retired by this time and did a little traveling). They saw to it that Annie had good gowns and robes and was remembered on her birthday and all holidays. When Annie passed away, my Dad called her son or whatever he was to her because as her guardian his responsibily and authority ended with her death. The son told my Dad he had done a good job so far and to just finish the job. My Dad had to get permission from Judge Hoteling to do this. All these years my Mother had the Bible. She died in 1996 - my Dad died in 2001. That’s when I found the Bible. I got into genealogy a few years back but since my folks were ill 14 years and I had to see to their care, I didn’t have time to even go through their things until after my Dad’s death--I too could not sell any Bibles I found in their house. I keep going through a 65 year accumulation of pictures, letters and Bibles. We all loved Annie and George - I got to know Annie better because she was in my folks’ home. I am the only one who ever visits their grave on Memorial Day. They are buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, Missouri. My Mother always put flowers on their graves and I will as long as I am able. I don’t know if we have any pictures of Annie or not - I think there is a newspaper picture of her and my Mother at a church function. If I find it, I will forward a copy to you. I know it would give Annie pleasure to know that a relative has her Bible and will cherish it. Sincerely, Jean Masters
