The only problem that I have found using flash drives, is that the older computers need an old flash drive. They don't recognize the newer ones. My hubby has XP and I have (so sorry) Vista... We each have a portable hard drive (due to the 3rd restore I had to do on the stupid Vista...) and have switched them. (Hubby thinks we each should have each others stuff) No problems so far. Sometimes Vista doesn't like an older version of some program (found that with Excel, for instance) - but it reads it. My advice - stay away from Vista as long as possible. I had no choice: my old laptop died. What I am curious about is if I have all my information backed up on a Flash Drive or CD, or whatever and I switch from a XP to Vista will the Vista program recognize the information. While we're on that subject, my next upgrade in the Mac line will include their product call Time Capsule. It's a wireless router using the 802.11n specification which is fast, and gives you the needed access to the internet, but also includes a print server so your computer doesn't have to be near the printer, and most importantly includes a hard drive at either 500MB or 1TB in size and you can later connect another hard drive later if that isn't enough storage. You use it with the Mac's new built-in software called Time Machine that does automatic backups to this device and you can back up all your computers in the house. It's pretty amazing, and is on my must-have list. John Slavin On Jan 20, 2008, at 8:59 PM, Virginia L. One might also consider just purchasing an external hard drive and storing your backup on it. I have used one for several years now and recently upgraded to a 160GB, because my old 40GB was nearly full. Regards, Virginia
I was just going to look at one. I am always looking for Colson Lovell (b.1769 ca and died after 1869). He has to be buried somewhere. Thanx, Vicki ----- Original Message ----- From: J.L. The other thing that I did was buy a portable A drive, with a USB port to attach to my newest computer/laptop. I use it all the time, since I help others with their family history and their stuff is ALWAYS on 3.5 in floppies. (One even had the larger true floppies... but that is really old!) I have transferred all that data over - that I can find, that is - and have it safely squirrelled away. If you still have the old machine, you might be able to remover the zip drive and install it in your new machine, at least long enough to transfer your data. Blessings! Susan
Hi, I checked the FHL records. They have a copy of the cemetery books at the FHL but they have not been filmed, so therefore, not available to loan at the local Family History Centers. The solution for me is: Before I upgrade to a new PC I will move whatever data I have on floppies & zips to a CD. I think all the newer PCs have a CD/DVD drive. If your old PC is already kaput and you already have one of the newer ones one might get a friend with an older machine to transfer your data to CD(s) or DVD(s). Mr. Nevins, As far as I know, the only source for Dodge's cemetery records is Helen St. Clair at P.O. Box 246, Luray, MO. The last time I talked to her, she didn't have any extra copies, but that has been a couple of months ago so she may have some now. Joanne A.
Eugene Dodge compiled three volumes of "Cemetery Inscriptions of Scotland County, Missouri" circa 1970. Campground Cemetery is included in Volume 1.
