JOHN C. LEACH >From Memphis (MO) Reveille, October 31, 1901, page 2, Col. 5 Mrs. John C. Leach died from the effects of an abscess, at her home in this city, Friday evening, October 21, at 7:50 o'clock. She had been in ill health for a long time. All through her illness she had good medical attention and the tender care of loving friends, but these could not stay the march of the merciless disease that was wasting her life away. Only a week or so befoe her death she was taken to the Graham Hospital in Keokuk for treatment, but had not been there long before the doctors gave up hope, so she was brought home last week to die, as the sequel shows. She was an estimable Christian lady, highly esteemed and beloved. In all her illness she was patient, cheerful and submissive. In this the twilight of the evening her pure and gentle spirit slipped away into the land of the everlasting dawn. All is well with her now. Friends ____ and will mourn, but she is at rest. Mary Odelphia Ketchum, (usually called Della), was born June 30, 1819, in Ripley, Huron County, Ohio. In December 1851 she moved with her parents to Keosauqua, Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood, and was married to John C. Leach, June 7, 1875. After their marriage they located in Memphis, Missouri where they continued to reside until her death. A few years of her life were spent in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she attended school. There she was united with the Episcopal Church. After moving to Memphis she joined the First Presbyterian Church by letter and held membership there until called to her reward. She was the mother of one son who died at the age of six months. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Sunday afternoon, Dr. W.R. Henderson, officiating, after which the body was tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. J.C. DRAKE DIED WEDNESDAY, AGED 88 >From Memphis Democrat (MO), March 15, 1928, page 1, col 3 Mrs. Rebecca Drake, widow of the late James C. Drake, and one of the oldest citizens of the county, died at her home in Memphis, Wednesday, March 7, 1928. She was over 88 years of age at the time of her death. Her maiden name was Rebecca Leach. She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Leach, and was born in West Virginia, November 13, 1839. She moved with her parents to near Keosauqua, Iowa when about ten years of age. She and Mr. Drake were married December 20, 1860, five children being born to this union. Funeral servies were conducted from the Presbyterian church in Memphis, Friday afternoon at 2:30 by the pastor Dr. I.C. Hunt. The Presbyterian choir rendered three selections. The pall bearers were three grandsons, Crawford, Ernest, and Leo Drake, and Ewing Poole, J.H. Morgan, and Hillis R. Leslie. Burial was in the Memphis cemetery. Among the out of town attendants at the funeral were Crawford Drake of Kansas City, Ernest Drake of Columbia, and Jet Wimp of Chicago. In preaching the funeral, Dr. Hunt said in part, "In early life she made a profession of faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Church, transferring her membership shortly thereafter to the Presbyterian Church with her husband, in which she remained a most consistent and devoted member. Mrs. Drake moved to Scotland county in 1860, coming to Memphis in 1895. She is survived by four children, Chas. Drake, of Bloomfield, Iowa; Alfred H. Drake, of Memphis; Mrs. Vinnie McDaniel, of Memphis; and Harvie T. Drake, of Scotland county. Her youngest daughter, Mrs. Della Wand of Denver, Colorado, died February 10. Besides her children, Mrs. Drake leaves one sister, Mrs. Sarah Fulk of Kansas, one full brother, William Leach of Memphis, and one half-brother, Martin Leach of California; twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. In her very early life heavy responsibilities came to her in the death of her mother and the care of rearing the youngest brothers, and sisters; these were assumed and discharged with the same spirit and sweet willingness and success which characterized her entire life. Her Christian faith was very simple and strong. She ordered her life and that of her family by the plain precepts of the Old Book. Perhaps the most striking characteristic in her life was the outstanding beauty and strenght of the love of the Christian mother-heart, which bound the affection of her children to her in an unusually tender, strong, and beautiful way. Down to the closing day there were three "boys" and "girls." Mrs. Drake will be missed and mourned." J.C. DRAKE DIED FRIDAY AUGUST 30 IN MEMPHIS >From Memphis Democrat (MO), September 5, 1918, page 1, col. 1 J.C. Drake died at his home Jefferson and Lincoln streets, Friday morning, August 30th 1918 after an illness of one week. He was born April 27, 1835, in Hardin county, KY. He moved to Iowa in 1854, and came to Scotland county, MO, in 1855, living here until his death. On Dec. 20, 1860 he was married to Rebecca Leach. To this union five children were born, Charles C. of Bloomfield, IA, Alfred H. of Kirksville, MO, Viney M. and Harvey T. of Memphis, and Della A. of Denver, CO. Mr. Drake united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church in early youth, and was known as living a sonsistent Christian life through all the years that followed. He was a devoted member of the Memphis Presbyterian church the last years of his life; and though defective hearing prevented his enjoying all the service of his church, yet he was so regular in attendance, for one of his years, as to be an example to those younger and able to hear perfectly. His life illustrated the meaning of Mat 7:30, "By their fruits (or works) ye shall know them." He was of a family of six brothers and seven sisters. Of these, with his wife and children, there survive him: John T. of Downing, MO; Daniel Miller of Memphis; Minor P. of Trenton, MO; Tena M. of Humansville, MO; and Judy E. of Kansas City. The funeral services were conducted in the First Presbyterian church by the pastor, Dr. F.M. Hawley, Monday afternoon, September 2, 1918, and at the grave, in the city cemetery, by the Masonic Order. The face of James C. Drake was quite familiar to all of our people. He had settled in Scotland county at an early day and was widely known as a man of affairs and as one deeply concerned about the welfare of his community. For years he had been a devout member of the Presbyterian church and his life was the consistent with his profession. He was of an affable nature and was genuinely liked and respected by all with whom he came into contact. He had lived to a ripe old age and his life was full of good works and words. The bereaved family and aged wife have the sympathy of all in this hour of sadness. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. June in Washington State, Wow! Your name piques my interest most definitely, and the name BEARD further excites. I'm sure Joanne Aylward will help identify/locate for you Cline cemetery. June, I have one Elizabeth A. Carroll (1846-1927), an elder sister of distaff great-great-grandmother Permelia D. Carroll Cook (1855-1937), who was first married 26 Aug 1866 to one William L/William T BEARD born 1847-1848 IL and who died 1884-1889, I believe. The couple had five known children according to census perusals. Widow Elizabeth later married 30 Jul 1888 with one Barry See (1836-1910). Are you descended of this line and indeed have the CARROLL name that is of great interest to me? Elizabeth and Permelia were daughters of Christopher Columbus "Peter" and Nancy M. Slavin Carroll, and oddly I have only birthdates for Peter and Nancy, no death dates nor places of burial. I use Family Tree Maker and can share good charts and outlines of my work. I would be very happy to correspond with you. Thanks, John, for bringing this query to the Scotland County list's attention. As for the other Alexander, I was just pointing out that the other Alexander lived within a mile of John Alexander, who is the only John Alexander in the 1858 plats. The one observation that I have made by having the plats is that when you see the names of families that intermarried, you begin to see why when you look at the proximity of where they lived. Likewise relatives sometimes resettled with their relatives. So this information isn't the end all, but perhaps another piece of the puzzle. It's on Map 6 in the far southwest corner in Section 31. To the west onto the next map to the west (Map 5) about a mile there is a Gideon Alexander that owned quite a bit of land in Section 35, and northwest of there (a couple miles away from John Alexander) also on the map to the west (Map 5), Moses Shanks owned some land as well in Section 23. Moses Shanks actually owned the farm I was raised on and Shanks owned it up through the 1930 plat and if I recall correctly owned it up nearly to the time my parents bought the land. Hope that helps.
