My father, also David Shelton, drove a feed truck for the MFA in Memphis from the 1960's to 1984 and he never mentioned the statue before, which is interesting since his uncle's name appears on the statue. (Ok I had to stop and look at the statue) I think moving the statue to the courthouse would be best because it will continue to go unnoticed, and it is a great treasure to the WWI boys who died. -- David Shelton Ancestory website http://www.interl.net/~davestoy/des/aqwx.htm Researching the surnames of: BILLS CLARK CLINE FRUIT/FRUITT/PRUITT HOBSON RUSSELL SHELTON SMITH WILLIAMSON GOLLIHER Have information for: ALBRECHT/ALBRIGHT DEAN/DEEN FAUST/FOUST ROCKHOLD TENNEY/TINNEY UNDERWOOD

    3. David, there is not a Barnett Cemetery at the site of the statue. Since I love talking about Scotland Co. history, I hope you won't mind if I share a condensed story of the Barnett statue. Parnell Botts Barnett was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. James Barnett and was among the first Scotland Co. men to be called up for service in WWI. He was sent to Camp Funston at Ft. Riley, KS and died shortly after; one source says from improper sterilization of the needles used to give immunizations. His grief-stricken parents took their son's body to their native Kentucky for burial. Mrs. Barnett hoped to see their home and beautiful grounds become a playground for neighborhood children in her son's memory. The statue stands near the roadside of what was once the front yard of the Barnett home. Mr. Barnett lost the farm during the Depression and he and his wife moved to Arkansas. Many years ago, there were plans to move the statue to the courthouse yard, but they were never carried out. It's very sad to see the statue vandalized and deteriorating. 3. Sandi, "A Town Called Memphis" does have some pictures. Of particular interest to you would be the picture of H.M. Gorin and a biography of him copied from the History of Lewis, Clark, Knox and Scotland Counties, MO,1887. The pictures in the book are mostly of buildings, churches, etc. in Memphis but there are others scattered throughout the book. The Genealogy Society does have a book that sells for $50. It is the Sesquicentennial book and it is half family histories and half county history. Hope this helps. 3. Sandi and others who may be interested: The book, "Town Called Memphis," is available for sale from the Scotland Co. Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 232, Memphis, MO 63555. The price is $15.00 plus $6.00 shipping and handling. It is a big book, lots of info mostly about Memphis but lots of other goodies, too. 3. I was recently down in Scotland County, around the Concord Cemetery area and decided to check out the Barnett cemetery. It was amazing to see a large statue of a WWI soldier appear out of no where on a dirt road. However that is all that I could see of the cemetery. Where did the cemetery go and does anyone have a list of those buried in it? I had several family members who used to live in the area and thought that they may be buried there. -- David Shelton Ancestory website http://www.interl.net/~davestoy/des/aqwx.htm Researching the surnames of: BILLS CLARK CLINE FRUIT/FRUITT/PRUITT HOBSON RUSSELL SHELTON SMITH WILLIAMSON GOLLIHER Have information for: ALBRECHT/ALBRIGHT DEAN/DEEN FAUST/FOUST ROCKHOLD TENNEY/TINNEY UNDERWOOD

    2. Sandi-- Gorin, Missouri was built on my family's land: Walter P. Ellis and William Woodsmall. Pleasant Grove Cemetery was established on the William Woodsmall farm. You can trace the evolution of the land transactions, the establishment of the rail junction and the creation of Gorin through the three platt maps located at the Scotland Co. Genweb website. I have some before and after photos of Gorin that I can share electronically via electronic album if you are interested. Like most of the small rural towns in the area, Gorin is en route to extinction. David Dlouhy

    3. Your post was of interest, but along a collateral line of my own family tree/research. One William HICKS, eldest sibling of TWO of my great-great-grandmothers as it happens, married a PELL in Tennessee, Kentucky, or perhaps Northeast Missouri. William HICKS b 12 Feb 1823(Greene Co., TN) md 26 Dec 1848 one Nancy Elizabeth PELL b 15 Sep 1832(IN) d/o William PELL b 1792-1800 NY & Anna MORRIS b 1805-1806 MD. Nancy Elizabeth may have had two sisters, Nancy Jane PELL and Sally Ann PELL. It is believed Jane md James W./James Townsend WHITAKER and Sally Ann md 25 Jun 1850 Schuyler Co., MO, one Marshall SMILEY. James and Jane's son Joseph WHITAKER 1843-1916 md 29 Dec 1869 Schuyler Co., MO, one Eliza C./Eliza Catherine Gross/GROSECLOSE 1855-1924 a first cousin of my maternal great-grandmother, Lizzie Jane GROSECLOSE FINCHER 1871-1919. The elder William Pell d 01 Apr 1877. His stone is found in Fabius Cemetery, Fabius Twp, Schuyler Co., MO. Is this your line? The HICKS-PELLs went on to rear their family in Kings Co., CA, and some of the WHITAKER-PELL line lived in Oklahoma. I wish you success with your book, it will be treasured by those awaiting its publication. Thanks for reading. 3. Thanks Kathy and thanks Gene! Gene, our Pell-Gorin line came out of Fairfax Co VA but some of the Pells went to TN I believe. Sarah Pell was believed to be the daughter of Richard Pell- it's a difficult line that many don't agree on.They were from England originally and one of the Pells was known as the Pig Killer. I know that the Pell's objected to the marriage of their dau to Henry Gorin so they had a "woods marrige" - they basically held the ceremony with minister in the "woods". Henry and his two brothers (John the eldest and Gladin the youngest) came to KY before statehood (1792) with John and Henry Gorin being Rev War soldiers. After living in the Lexington KY area (Fayette Co), they came to Barren Co (where I live). Our line (Henry Gorin) moved to Warren Co, then to Christian Co and died in Todd Co KY. Henry's son, John Darns Gorin had a son, Dr Bartley William Gorin who moved from Christian Co to Decatur, IL and then to Louisiana Mo. John Darns Gorin (love that middle name!) had another son, Henry Madison Gorin who then split out to Memphis, MO - they had transactions back and forth between Decatur IL and Memphis MO for yrs. My daus are descended from Dr Bartley W Gorin and later spread to Chicago IL, Spfld IL and all points beyond. I will look at my Pell documention over the weekend - I have a Pell book which I'll check. If I can find anything, I'll post it for you. Sandi Col. Back in the early 1970's a gentlemen in Memphis sent me a photo of John D Gorin (my dau's immediate line) from the Memphis Lodge - Mr. Dodge? It's been so long. This is to be used in a family book on the descendants of the Henry and Sarah Pell Gorin line - one branch, that of Henry Madison Gorin, moved from Christian Co KY to Christian Co IL to Macon Co IL to Louisiana, MO to Memphis, MO. This would mean the world to me. I'm on a deadline to get this book done for a couple of the descendants who are not in good health. I would be thrilled if you could help; and the only way I can think to say thank you is to donate a copy of the book to the Memphis library or help one of you with research in the area of KY I live in. I am wondering if anyone on the list can be of a help. Henry Madison Gorin and his partner Charles Mety operated a mercantile in Memphis MO for many years. I just found reference to the Mety and Gorin Mill, the first wool mill at Memphis.
