Joyce, I think I found that info on the Prather rootsweb mail list. Here is some of the ancestry of Lark: John Hunt Prathers' parents were Philomen Gittings Prather 1707-1767 Laurens Co., SC and Catherine Hunt. Philomen's parents were Thomas McKay Prather Sr. (ca 1671 Calvert Co., MD, died 1711 Prince Georges Co., MD) and Martha Sprigg. Thomas McKay Prather Sr.'s parents were Jonathan Prather (born 1635 Elizabeth City, Va., died 1680 Prather's Hall, Calvert Co., MD) and Jane McCay/McKay. Jonathan's parents were Thomas Prater (born Dec. 26, 1606 Eaton Water, Wiltshire, England, died 1680 in VA or MD) and Mary McKay. I have quite a lot of info on Prater/Prather. There are four volumes of books published on Prathers but unfortunately I don't have any of them. I'll try to answer any questions you may have. I'm thinking my Star School is different, but could be wrong. Saline county was formed from Cooper and Howard counties on 25 Nov 1820. There are Starr Schools in only 3 counties: Putnam, Lafayette, and Monroe. There are Star Schools in about 23 different counties. The Starr School in Lafayette county is where you said it was: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.97694&lon=-93.92028&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l Mike > Subject: Re: [MOSALINE] Webb School > Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2004 19:31:37 -0500 > From: "Carol Knott" <cknott@cox.net> > To: MOSALINE-L@rootsweb.com > > I believe that Starr School is also in Lafayette Co. I think that is another Webb School. There are Webb Schools in the following counties: Butler, Lafayette, Mississippi, Morgan, Lafayette, and Saline. And it appears there are 2 different ones in Lafayette county. One is 4 miles south of Dover and about 6 miles N of Higginsville. The other is on the west side of Lafayette county, very close to the Jackson county line, roughly 5.5 miles NW of Chapel Hill. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.13556&lon=-93.67750&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l and http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.98278&lon=-94.10278&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l The 2nd one is reportedly gone now. I wonder which one you have? Mike - I just located my photos of the Webb School and it says Lafayette County not Saline County as I thought. Maybe that's the problem you have locating it. I have a photo taken in 1920 and one of my grandmother's 8th grade class taken about the same time. Let me know if you are interested in seeing them. I believe that Starr School is also in Lafayette Co. It is south of Odessa on Starr School road and is a residence now. It apparently is on the register of historic places. Mike, Shackleford if a very small spot in the road about 4-5 miles west of Marshall, Mo, on Route 20. I don't think it is shown on any maps. Route 20 is shown on maps and it you follow it out of Marshall it shows a turn to the south before continuing on west. Shackleford is right at that turn. The funny thing now is they have a sign that says "Shackleford" on one side and "Shackelford" on the other. My father was a railroader and we lived above the train depot there for a couple of days while waiting on our house in Marshall. I went to the Shackleford school for 1 and 1/2 days in 1945. The school and the depot are no longer there. Barbara Harvey Harper Oak Grove, Mo
I've "rescued" two old photographs which appear to belong to the BLOSSER & SAILOR Families. The first is a photograph of Betsey Ann SAILOR which was taken at the T.J. Simcoe Studio in Marshall, Missouri. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Betsey looking to be in her 60's at the time it was taken. In addition to Betsey's name someone has written "Mother's oldest sister" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I believe that Betsey Ann SAILOR was born Elizabeth Ann BLOSSER on 10 Feb 1823 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia and married Aaron SAILOR on 11 Aug 1842 in Pike Co., Ohio. The couple is believed to have had 10 children including, William H., Joseph B., Susan, Jeremiah, Aaron, Mary J., Jacob, Elizabeth, Daniel B., and Cinthia A. SAILOR all born between 1845 and 1865, probably in Pike Co., OH. Records show that her husband Aaron SAILOR died 22 April 1866. In the 1880 census Betsy Ann SAILOR age 57 is found living in Malta Bend, MO with 4 of her children, Mary J., Jacob, Daniel B., and Cinthia A. SAILOR. The second photograph is of Mrs. Sarah BLOSSER and was taken at the Hurley Studio in Marshall, MO. This photograph was likely taken in the 1880's with Sarah appearing to be in her 40's at the time. Based on limited research I believe that this is a photograph of Sarah BLOSSER age 42 born in OH the wife of Henry BLOSSER age 49 born in VA who are recorded in the 1880 census living in Marshall, MO with 7 children. The BLOSSER children recorded in that census include, E.J. age 21, M.E. age 19, Joseph J. age 17, Quincy age 14, Henry I. age 9, William age 1, and "Unnamed" Male child age 2 months. The three oldest children are listed as born in Ohio with the last all born in MO. I'm not sure what the specific relationship is between these two women but I'm certain they are related in some way and I'm hoping to see the photographs returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Thanks for all the information. We are still looking. Shackelford is located about five miles west of Marshall on 20 Highway. There are a few houses there and a closed Catholic church.
Mike - I'm not certain of the exact location of the Webb school but I have a photo of my grandmother's class. She was born in 1908 and my notes say she attended Webb School near Oak Grove, Missouri but I am not certain this was correct. Her parents George and Emma (Mueller) Baldus were married on February 28, 1906 near Mt. Leonard, Missouri. They first lived on a farm in an area called "Blind Pony", about five miles northeast of Sweet Springs, Missouri. Their farm is now part of the southwest corner of the Blind Pony Conservation Reservation in Saline County, Missouri. Later they moved to a portion of the Joseph Baldus farm known as the Crank farm, where a new house had been built for them. So the Webb School would have been near one of these locations. I would be very interested in knowing exactly where it was located also. I'm trying to find the exact location of the following schools that are no longer in existence: Shackleford School - Saline County - - The name of this school was transferred from a town Obviously in or near Shackleford, but I can't place it. Star School - Saline County Webb School - Saline County - - This school was named for a local family. Whites Island School - Saline County - - This school was named for a local family. I know where Whites Island is, but not exactly where Whites Island School was. Mike Flannigan
Need some assistance please. I recently received a copy of an article about Charley Roscher, former city marsall of Sweet Springs, Missouri who turned 100 on July 22nd. I would like to quote the article in my family history but I don't have the name of the newspaper or date. There is a something on the back of the article that says "The Herald". Would this be the newspaper and does anyone have a date this article might have run in the newspaper? Many thanks. Conni Mitchell Braun Baldus Family Historian
Hi Meredyth, Yes, Raymond is a distant cousin also. He was the son of Augustus Ralph Edmonds and his wife Ann Jane Saufley and brother to Gussie Edmonds named in the diary. I think Jane Saufley was the mother to Alice Foster. Alice Foster is listed as a dau. to A.R. and Jane. A. R. owned the Drug Store and is the Dr. named. A.R. was a first cousin to my gg grfather Ryland Edmonds. I sent your web site to my cousin, Tom Edmonds in Kansas City who is a descendant of A.R. Edmonds. I know he will certainly enjoy reading the diaries. He has a lot of history on his Edmonds but not those wonderful tidbits of info. THANK YOU so much for sharing those. Wib sounds like he was a very likeable fellow. Hi Nancy....thank you so much for such a quick, and nice, response to the Miami, MO, diaries. I think you might particularly enjoy the 1893 "trip to the World's Fair" because my grandfather's traveling partner was Raymond EDMONDS (is he part of your family?) Meredyth
