    3. Dear Listers, In my files, I found this old segment of a letter. You may be interested in looking up the cited materials, which are available at various libraries: On Nov 24, 1910 Henry Strother, an attorney in Ft Smith, AR, wrote to my great grandfather, Judge Wm S. Pryor, in New Castle, KY: It is known that the widow Merriwether's maiden name was Frances Morton, and that she was a sister of Joseph Morton, of James City Co., VA (long a member of the House of Burgesses), and as the name Joseph and Morton frequently appears among the descendants of Samuel Pryor. . . Dr. Daniel Morton of St. Joseph, MO in 1903, compiled a lot of Morton data and published same in the "VA Historical Magazine" -in several numbers. I have only a part of the numbers his data is published in. It seems the founder of the Morton family in VA was one John Morton who died in 1722. . . His son, John Morton, Jr., died on 1727-8, intestate. He married about 1714 (?) Mary Mountjoy, dau of Alvin Mountjoy and his wife Mary Lane, dau of William Lane, who got patent to l;and in Richmond Co., VA. Gov. Oliver P. Morton of Indiana was of this. . . family. Gov Silas Woodson of Mo was a descendant of Betsy Morton, and Gen J.E.B. Stuart was a descendant of William Morton. Tom of the Mortons

    3. Does anyone have information on the following family in Franklin Co.? Either going back or coming forward would be helpful. This information in from the 1910 and 1920 census for Franklin County, Franklinton township and from my sister's baby book: Alexander Morton, born abt 1871 in Franklin Co., NC Katie LUCAS (Morton) born abt 1874 in Franklin Co. NC Children (all born in Franklin Co.): Thomas Henry born abt April 14, 1898. Died April 1968. Married Ellen Gardner PREDDY bet 1918-1922. They divorced bef 1930. Charles S. born abt 1902 Andrew born abt 1906-1907 Oza born abt 1906-1907 (twin?) Sam born abt 1912 Alexander born abt 1918 My mother thought that there was a Florence, who married a Poole and lived in Raleigh in the 1950s and also a Lawrence. I have not been able to find evidence for Lawrence, and I think Florence may be Oza. Sam Morton lived in Atlanta, Ga for many years and died there within the past 15 years.

    3. I am trying to find more information about Gerrard (Jarrott) Morton who lived in Orange Co. VA in late 18th century. I have Gerrard and William Morton as witnesses for a rental document for Richard and Patience Morton in 1778 Orange Co. Gerrard is a witness to the marriage of John Rucker and Betty Tinsley in 1780 Orange Co. "The History of Virginias in the Revolution" lists a Jarrott Morton as a signer of the Orange petitions. I recently accessed these petitions on the VA State Library web site and the signature I found looks like Geo. (for George) to me. The book also lists a Gerard Morton in the 2nd VA Regulars of Continental Line; however the National Archives has no info on him. Has anyone out there any information on this or any other Gerrard (Jerod) Morton? Betty T.
