    1. [MORTON] Re: WILLIAMS and MORTON
    2. Pauline Denmark
    3. John and Mary WILLIAMS were baptising their children at West Malling in Kent between 1757 and 1770. They were : William 1757 Mary 1759 Joseph 1761 John 1763 Elizabeth 1765 and Thomas 1770. Joseph WILLIAMS was my husband's 4 x gt. grandfather, who fathered Robert Williams MORTON on Jane MORTON 3 years before their marriage in 1786, also at West Malling. For reasons which we shall never know, Robert Williams MORTON (a Captain in the army) apparently retained his mother's maiden name and passed it on down the line to his own children and his later descendants. Hence, there are no more WILLIAMS references in the family. Is it unusual for siblings of the same parentage to have different surnames? I would be interested to know whether anyone has any knowledge of this family and Joseph's five siblings, and would be glad to share what information I have with others. DOWDEN, born in Denningsville, Washington Co., PA on August 13, 1848. Rascilles married Mary KRAFT from Somerset Co., PA on Sept. 21, 1868 and migrated to Kansas City, MO where their daughter, Mary Elizabeth LYNE, was born in 1869. From there they came to Ottawa Co., KS by 1875. Their son, James Henry DOWDEN, was born around 1872 in KS. In the 1850 Washington Co., PA census, I found Phoebe DOWDEN, age 36, with children--Margaret, age 16, Mary A., age 15, Castner, age 6, Henry, age 11, McCluskey, age 9, Susan E., age 1, and Wesley, age 13--all were born in PA. I found probate records for James DOWDEN, deceased, dated Sept. 25, 1849, from Washington County, PA. Does anyone have any info on Castner? I am wondering if that is the middle name for my Rascilles. In Mary KRAFT DOWDEN'S photo collection are lots of photos that I believe are DOWDEN family members. The photos are taken at studio's in Bedford, Muncie, Lebanon, Elwood, and Mitchell, Indiana. 3. I think the transcribers had a terrible time deciphering the writing. I have enclosed 2 examples of Morton changed to Martin on the first one and Morton changed to Morgan for Samuel and Nancy. You might have to search for different spellings. HTH Audrea from Ontario, Canada # 1 1860 Philadelphia Census BUCKLEY MORTON 927 24W.7P.PHILADELPHIA BUCKLEY SAMUEL 735 24W.5P.PHILADELPHIA BUCKLEY SARAH 734 24W.5P.PHILADELPHIA BUCKLEY THOMAS 1039 24W.8P.PHILADELPHIA MARTIN NANCY 734 24W.5P.PHILADELPHIA (I think this is Nancy Morton, Sarah Buckley's mother, but the indexer spelled it incorrectly. Notice she is on page 734 as is Sarah Buckley). # 2 West Philadelphia 1850 roll 823 page 507 dwelling 98, family 111 Philadelphia, West Philadelphia, 1850 roll 823, page 507 dwelling 98, family 111 Samuel Morgan, 60, male, Innkeeper, b. England Nancy Morgan, 60, female, b. England Morton Buckley, 20, male, no occupation, b. England Michael McCready, 62, male, no occupation, b. Ireland Bridget Beular, 36, female, b. Ireland P. S. I was wondering if Samuel and Nancy Morgan were really Samuel and Nancy Morton and the census taker just made a mistake. That would probably make them Morton's grandparents if so. > Hello List: Still trying to locate Marshall Morton, Sr. before he is found in > census and have had no luck. 1. [MORTON] John, Joseph & Capt. John
    2. Betty L. Trantow
    3. Several list members have written recently about Joseph Morton Sr. and his son Capt. John, so I decided to add my 2 cents worth. No. 1) The wife of John Morton Sr, born in Kent, England was Joan Anes Hughes, not Joan Hughes Anes. The Henrico Co. Probate records say John married the widow of John Huss on 7/25/1682. No. 2) The first wife of Capt. John, grandson of John & Joan, son of Joseph and Jene (see below), who married 2nd Lucinda Blakely, was Amey Johnson. She died about 1776. No. 3) I have two more children of John and Lucinda in my list than Shadrak93 does. Elesa Beth Johnson Morton, b 10/17/1780 and Amey Johnson Morton b. 4/1/1777. You would think these two should belong to the first wife, and Amey possibly could, but certainly not Elesa Beth, according to John & Lucinda's marrige date of 9/27/1777. I also have middle name of son John as John Johnson. They are children of his 2nd marriage to Lucinda. No. 4.) Jane Tenney wrote of Capt. John's children. I have James born 12/7/1782 instead of 2/7. I also have Joab married Jane Roberts, 11/7/1815 Clark Co. KY. [Beware of using Capt. John to identify one man. There are four Capt. John Mortons listed in DAR miliary list.] No. 5) Re J.T.'s footnote: Yes Thomas, John, and Joseph were brothers, children of John and Joan (above). I also have a James, Jacob, William, and Richard as children of John and Joan. No. 6) Joseph's first wife, Jene or Jane, I believe to be a Royall, but can't prove it yet. Witness middle name of his daughter Jane. Does anyone have the last name of his second wife Elizabeth? No. 7) Of Joseph's children I have Ame instead of Anne, easily mistaken. I opt for Ame because of his son John's 1st wife's name. I also have a possible son William, but he must have died before Joseph's will was made. Betty T.

I do not know who he married or the names of his children except our direct ancestor John Morton who married Annie Poe and had at least two sons who were John Morton Jr. and William Morton. William Morton is my husband's gg grandfather. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jane Tenney <tenney@skyenet.net> To: <MORTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 17, 2000 8:54 PM Subject: [MORTON] RE:Decendents of Capt. 3. I'm resending my last post as I noticed that it should have been sent as plain text. I am decended from Marshall MORTON ca. 1760-1830 Marshall Co. AL. my 4th great grandfather. I am also stuck at Marshall Sr. and in addition his grandson Henry MORTON's wife Rebecca LANGLEY. If anyone has information on Marshall Sr.'s and his wife Winnie's parents or Rebecca's parents please share, also I will be happy to share any info I have with my cousins. ----- Original Message ----- From: Letitia Morton To: MORTON-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 5:09 AM Subject: Re: [MORTON] Frances MORTON, ca 1725 in VA The name Marshall Morton poped out at me.
