    1. [MORTON] Morton, Moton, Moten - Alabama
    2. Jada Walker
    3. I am looking for my grandfather Derry Moton/Moten. He is from Montogomery Alabama. He was in the military, and served in Kentucky during the mid 1940's. My father was conceived during this time. My father was born in 1944 so, I assume Derry was born in the early 1920's. If you have any information or any possibilities, please respond to this ad. He may or may not be alive, but he probably has other children. Help Please God Bless and good luck with your search. 1. [MORTON] John Morton Family
    2. I am researching the Morton Family originally from Chester Cty., PA. The family was Quaker and descendants moved to Cincinati, Ohio. Great-great Grandfather was John Rhodes Morton and his wife was Mary Hopkins. Is anyone out there researching this line? Family lore has it that this line is somehow connected to John Morton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, but I am not sure how that works. John Rhodes Morton's father was named John also. mary

    2. John Morten's fathers name is not is the papers that I have but his grandfather name was Morton Mortonson Morton was of Finnish Swedish descent born in 1725 shortly after the death of his family on a farm in Fidley Twonship Chester County (Present Delaware) Joh Sketchley, and Enhlidhmsn who subsequintly married the widowed mother of the youth, reared and educated him Their relationship was apparently close, for Morton later named his eldest son Sketchly. The stepfather, learned in Mathematics, taught the boy the threeR's as well as surveying. He practicticed that profession on and off all his life, as well as farming, politics, and jurisprudence.. He married in his early 20's and in 1748 or 1749 and he fathered five daughters and four son.. Morton fell ill and died within the year after sighing the Declaration, in the spring of 1777 This was taken from a book Biographical Sketches of the Signer of the Declaration of Independance. and a newspaper clipping That was in Greatgrandmother stuff.. But on familysearch.org you can find enough on that web site to weed out the monton's . susan ----- Original Message ----- From: <JCarver30@aol.com> To: <MORTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2001 7:15 AM Subject: [MORTON] John Morton "the signer" > I have a lot of Morton information but haven't been interested in John "the > signer" until it has come up recently on the list. 3. Sorry, when I come across ALA/TX Mortons, I just know that our family didn't go there until, if at all, years later. When I arrived at the death of William Ragland Morton of Russelville, KY in 1841, Jan 30th, then I know that our paternal line died out and the maternal line picked up with the marriage of Sarah Morton to Gabriel Lewis Postlethwaite in Lexington, KY. I have come to the conclusion for my own sanity, that I just have to limit the plethora of information to just what I need to say to my family,"Here it is! If you want more, you must dig it out." It has to do with a singleness of purpose. The closer I get to the "light at the end of the tunnel", that singleness of purpose is even more evident. I must leave it to the rest of the Morton family to research what they need. Does that philosophy sound sensible? When I complete what I need then perhaps I will return to the wider family! 2. I have Lovina Morton who was married to Thomas Carney. They are my great-grandparents. They lived in Sinnamahoning, Cameron Co., Pennsylvania in 1881 when my grandfather John A. Carney was born. Any Links to your family in Pennsylvania? Thanks, Barb

    3. Ian and Jackie, I recognized the "humble" as perhaps a village but the other term was new to me. Re: the Morton family: how far back can you trace from where you are living now? What about your parish records? Our family came from England in 1630's and settled in VA. There is considerable confusion about who came and where but our "progenitor" was a William. He came over when he was 20 yrs old, married an Anne and had 3 boys and 2 girls. We also have a John Morton who appears in the Northern Neck of Virginia in Northumberland County in 1694, bought property in Richmond County and began a long line of Mortons. I doubt very much that any of the early Mortons even thought about sending information back to England to be recorded at Parish level for they were to busy just living, with all that entailed. I do know who these Mortons are not!!! in terms of where they lived. They were faithful to the Church of England liturgy and not the Presbyterian form of worship. That fact, in itself, is helpful but still doesn't tell what their place of origination nor parentage. Does that help? In the early days of our country, there were a lot of Mortons in New England and Virginia, as well as Pennsylvania and subsequently in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and points west. 3. The patterns of migration of these Mortons indicate to me that this is not our line, but it is most interesting. Our family came to VA early on in 1600's and the lineage comes directly to my husband's line of Morton>Postlethwaite in KY>Taylor in TN. 3. Hi! Don't understand your "hound to hamble then to Southampton." Are these the names of villages? What county? Did your Mortons come to the new world? If so, when and on what ship, if you have found out the name of it. Where did they go when they came here?
