Erica, I don't know for sure that I can help but some of your story sounds familiar. I have a Roy Morse in my family tree that lived in LaPorte and died in Michigan City. I could never prove that he ever married. He and his "wife" Nellie Kanney had two children Charles Roy and Harriet June from Riverside CA. I had a hard time tracing this branch because no one wanted to talk about the family tree. I don't have a Clifford however I can't help but wonder that there might be a connection. Get his death certificate, and see if you can learn his date and place of birth and names of his parents. Then send for his birth certificate. Burial records could also yield information about when he was born. Census records should tell you approximately when he was born, though people often get their ages wrong by as much as five years, and also give you an idea what state or country he was born in - and check all available census records for that. If you can pin down his identity sufficiently get an ancestry.com subscription for the census, and search all likely years for him nationwide. The name Roy Morse alone might or migh tnot yield too many hits. In some years, the census will tell you how long people had been married for, so you atleast know when to look for documentation. When you've got all the info on him, begin again with his parents. Obits and death announcements are other excellent ways to get info, and they often list the entire family and life history. If you can learn where he might have married you might possibly also find a wedding announcement.
