Surnames: Morse, Matthews, McCormick, Henderson, Turney, Cathcart Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UN2.2ACIB/1231 Message Board Post: The following newspaper obituary was found pasted into my great great grandmother's bible. Alice Morse is not a relative and I have no further information. ALICE MORSE At 6 p.m. on Monday evening, May 21, 1900, at the family residence, in Snohomish, Wash., Mrs. Alice Morse, wife of Eldridge Morse of this city, passed to her final rest. Pneumonia, heart failure and hemorrhage of the lungs ended her sufferings after but three days of sickness. The many marked characteristics of Mrs. Morse made her exceedingly well known in this community. She was born at Winona, Minn., Feb. 22, 1858. Her maiden name was Alice Matthews. Her mother was a relative of McCormick, the inventor of the McCormick reaper. In early life Mrs. Morse lived in her father's family in several states. At Sacramento, Cal., she learned the glove makers' trade and all about hotel work. When nineteen years of age she married Mr. Hiram Henderson, superintendent of the street railway of Sacramento, who died of quick consumption, less than one year after her marriage. She then successfully ran a boarding house there, until her second marriage to William Turney. They lived at Sacramento until 1883 when they moved to Puget Sound. On locating at Snohomish they opened a glove factory. Afterwards they accepted employment in the Snohomish Exchange Hotel, then very efficiently run by Isaac Cathcart. While thus employed Mr. Turney died very suddenly of appoplexy. On June 10, 1885, she married Eldridge Morse, the well-known pioneer lawyer and journalist, of Snohomish County. The fruits of this marriage are five surviving children: Belle, John, Arthur, Harley B., and Roland Irving Morse. During several years of trials and struggles Mrs. Morse developed peculiar clairvoyant faculties. Thus, year by year, her dreams would with the greatest accuracy foretell what was to happen. During the past three years she has repeatedly dreamed that she was very nicely dressed and prepared to go to the Congregational church. She had this dream for the last time only a few days ago. It was fulfilled, but so differently from her anticipations. Very fitting, simple but impressive, exercises were conducted by Rev. Winchester, at the Congregational Church, in this place. The funeral took place at 2 p.m., May 23, 1900. The body was laid to rest beside the grave of Mr. Morse's first wife, Martha A., in the family burial ground, in the old cemetery. Leander W. Matthews and Arthur Matthews, well known residents of this county, living near the Marysville road, some seven miles north-west of here are brothers of deceased. Alice Matthews the popular and efficient teacher of the public school there is her neice and namesake.

Copyright 2006. All rights reserved. Cleo K. Morse 1941-2006 Cleo Kay Morse, 65, went home to be with her Lord on Aug. 8 at the Life Care Center of Cheyenne following a courageous battle with cancer. Cleo was born May 27, 1941, in Eagle Butte, S.D. to William W. and Rose M. (Blatner) Keckler. She was raised on the family ranch near Eagle Butte. She attended first through sixth grade in a one-room country school. The country school closed and she attended junior and senior high in town. She graduated from Eagle Butte High School in May 1959. She wed Howard "Lu" Morse on June 7, 1959. Lu and Cleo moved to Rapid City, S.D. shortly after being married. They lived in rural South Dakota from 1964 to 1968. The family moved to Greeley, Colo. in 1968 and to Laramie in 1969. In October 1971, Cleo and her family moved to Hanna. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Cleo became the owner/operator of the Golden Rule Motel when it opened in January 1972. Cleo continued to operate the motel until her illness required her to close it. Cleo worked at Burton's Wharehouse in Laramie in 1970. She became a certified nurses aid and worked at Park Manor Nursing Home in Rawlins, from 1996 to 1997. In 1998, she began working as a food service worker at Hanna Elementary, where she was employed at the time of her illness. The many children she saw and talked to everyday were her favorite part of her job. Cleo was also an Avon representative for 18 years. Cleo was actively involved in many groups during her life. She was a charter member and treasurer of the Hanna Baptist Church. She taught numerous children in Sunday school and vacation Bible school over a period of 39 years. Cleo was a member of the Centennial Committee and helped organize the Hanna Centennial celebration. While serving on the Centennial Committee, she became a member of the Lasting Legacy Scholarship Committee. As an avid reader, it was important to Cleo that the town of Hanna have a library for the enjoyment of all. She helped organize the library in the mid 1970s and again in the early 1980s when it moved to its current location. Cleo served as an officer in the Wyoming Southern Baptist Convention's Energy Basin Association for many years. She was a supporter of the Hanna Basin Museum, a 4-H leader for 18 years, a past member of the Jolly Neighbors Homemakers Club in Hanna, a past member and local and state officer in the Progressive Diggers Fedreated Women's Club and served on the Carbon County Visitors Council. Cleo was a very enthusiastic quilter and enjoyed being a part of Project Linus Quilts. Project Linus quilters added to or finished quilts started by others, which would be donated to children being treated at St. Jude's hospitals. She was a member of the Wyoming State Quild Guild. Other hobbies included oil painting, crocheting, sewing, working on her computer, and designing and weaving baskets. Cleo also took many college classes through the Carbon County Higher Education program. She also loved all types of music and often attended concerts with her friends and family. Cleo is survived by her children, daughter Kaye Simenson (Scot) of Fargo, N.D., son William "Tuffy/Bill" (Melody) of Cheyenne and daughter Rebecca "Beccy" (John) Kruse of Casper; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Ann (Louis) Chase of West Fargo, N.D.; numerous nieces and nephews; and former husband Howard "Lu" Morse of Rawlins. I am researching a Preston W. Morse. I'm doing this for a friend at my church and I've found out very little about Preston. I don't even know if Wing is what the W stands for. Preston was my friend's grandfather. He was born approx. 1859 in Beacon, NY. He and his parents later lived in LaGrange NY. His father was Joseph Jason and Margaret M. Morse.. He had a sister named Susan E. who was born around 1874. Could that be your grandmother? He had several other brothers and sisters. He married Mary Anne Dingee. I think Preston died around 1931 or 32. One of the big reason's of this research is that my friend would like to know where Mary Anne is buried. She also said that Preston and Mary Anne were separated or divorced. She is afraid that Mary Anne is in a pauper's grave somewhere. My friend is 90 yrs old. I think it's sweet that she is worried about her grandmother. I would appreciate anything you can tell me about the Morse family or also the Haughtaling's or the Dingee family. By the way, I'm not a professional genealogist. Thank you, Billie
