Most of us? As near as I can tell, there is no common thread for a "most of us" who are laboring to trace our Morrow ancestry. While Morrow was only the 525th most common American surname in the 1990 census, that's still enough of us for it to have evolved from different sources for different lines. I've met Morrow researchers who believed their name was rooted in the French Moreau or Italian Moro, for example. Certainly the tradition in my family says ours derived from the Scots clan Murray and passed through Northern Ireland as Morrow. My own Protestant Irish immigrant ancestor to the US, Charles Morrow, settled in Bucks County, PA, about 1800. Some in the family think he was from County Down; I don't know why they believe that. His grave marker says he was born in 1782, so he apparently migrated as a teen-ager -- that fact alone may partly explain why there is much uncertainty about his origins. I've found Morrows from Australia, Canada, and various parts of the US who share similar oral traditions to that of my family. If it has no substance, it seems odd that the same tale should crop up so many places. On the other hand, I've never found anyone who could document this traditional tale -- which may simply mean it is rooted deeper than the age of widespread record-keeping, but could also imply the story is bogus. Many of us think that morrow came from McMurrough and ancient Irish name from around Dublin. Others think that Morrow is Scot Irish. For the most of us morrow is a purely Irish name going back at least 1000 years. > > > ==== MORROW Mailing List ==== > Visit the Morrow List Website! > http://www.rootsweb.com/~daisy/morrwinx.htm > >
