Looking for anything on MORROWs in NJ in the 1700s. There were three possibly related male MORROWs in Northern NJ in the mid to late 1700s: 1) John MORROW: b. by 1751; d. aft. 1800; m. by 1779 to Elizabeth ALEXANDER, d/o William ALEXANDER & Janet AIKMAN. Resident of Mendham Twp., Morris Co., NJ by 1772. Children: James (b. by 1785), William (b. 1776-1783), Janet, and possibly Robert (b. ~1793). 2) Thomas MORROW: b. prob. by 1750; d. ~1776, Somerset Co., NJ; m. to Rachel _?_ (possibly remarried 1777-1779 to Joseph TODD in Somerset Co., NJ). Resident of Bernards Twp., Somerset Co., NJ by 1769-1776 period and possibly whole life (this or an older Thomas MORROW "of Baskin [sic] Ridge" appears in a 1749 record as an adult). Children: Thomas (b. 1755-1776), William (b. 1755-1776), Margaret (b. 1758-1776), and Janet (b. 1758-1776). 3) James MORROW: b. 1736-1737; d. 1820, Sussex Co., NJ; m1. to _?_; m2. 1770 in Sussex Co., NJ to Jane GARDNER. Resident of Hardiston Twp., Sussex Co., NJ from 1750s onward. Children: Robert, James, William, George (b. 1778-1779), Thomas, Hester/Esther (unmarried in 1820), Elizabeth m. Josiah VANCE (d. by 1820), Jane m. Job CORY, Margaret m. _?_ McCLENEN, Elener m. _?_ DECKER. There are many indications that John of Morris may have come across the county line from Somerset Co. such that he would presumably be kin to Thomas of Somerset. There are also indications that James of Sussex may have come out of this area as well such that he is also kin. If that Thomas in Somerset in 1749 is a separate individual from the Thomas who died in Somerset about 1776 leaving four minor children, then the hypothetical elder Thomas would fit as father of the three as follows: Thomas MORROW: b. by 1728, but prob. NLT 1718 if James of Sussex is a son. Resided in Basking Ridge, Somerset Co., NJ in 1749. Possible children: 1) James MORROW of Sussex Co., NJ (b. 1736-1737) 2) Thomas MORROW of Somerset Co., NJ (b. prob. 1740s) 3) John MORROW of Morris Co., NJ (b. by 1751) Unfortunately, I have few records of any MORROWs in Somerset Co. I have nothing between a Thomas MORROW of Basking Ridge serving as bondsman with John BARCLAY for the latter's marriage to Catherine CRAWFORD of "Elizabeth Town" (Elizabeth, NJ) in 1749 and the Thomas MORROW recorded as pew holder at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church 1769-1776 (listed with Elisha AYERS and Joseph TODD for Pew #23). Then I have nothing between the 1776 will of a Thomas MORROW and the 1821 marriage of an Alexander MORROW to Mariah NESBITT, despite the fact that the aforementioned Thomas left two minor sons in 1776. It certainly appears that the Alexander of 1821 is son of one of those boys. All I can add for possible clues is that Thomas of 1776 named Hugh GASTON (along with his (Thomas') wife Rachel) as his executor suggesting a possible GASTON connection, direct or indirect. Furthermore, the will was witnessed by John HUSTON, John McCAIN, and Robert CUMMINS, possibly suggesting further connections. Minimally, the GASTONs, McCAINs, and LOGANs appear to have intermarried. Perhaps the MORROWs were tied into this web as well. Lastly, James MORROW (s/o John of Morris) and his wife Adah _?_ (possibly LEWIS?), both of Mendham Twp., Morris Co., sold land on Indian Grove Brook in Bernards Twp., Somerset Co. in 1806. They sold it to John PAGE of Piscataway, Middlesex Co. and the transfer was witnessed by _?_ BAKER and John McCARTER. Do more MORROW records exist in Somerset? Does anybody have anything on MORROW in Somerset Co., NJ in the 1700s or on anything else related to the MORROWs described above? So long as most of those Somerset records have not been destroyed, surely there should be MORROWs hidden in there somewhere. BTW, I just read a comment that the records of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church have only just become available. If this is true, then this may be why I was never able to properly assemble this family in Somerset Co. I have a suspicion that the whole thing comes together in those church records. If anyone has the ability to do a MORROW lookup in the records of the Basking Ridge Presbyerian Church for the 1700s and early 1800s, I would greatly appreciate anything and everything they can tell you. Dear BobHop, The William Morrow who married Nancy Field was the oldest child of James Morrow and Elizabeth Frame Morrow. They were married in Agusta Co. in 1771 and left for Kentucky in 1775. James' will mentions William as his son married to Nancy Field also Elizabeth's....both recorded in Clark Co. Kentucky. In 1792 a William Morrow was elected Sherriff of Bourbon Co. James Morrow is recorded as signing his bond in Bourbon Co. Court records. In 1787 a William Morrow 14 years old is recorded as living with a Margaret Morrow at Bowman Station 6 miles from Ft. Harrod, but a year later she is listed as living alone and as before not married. I believe possibly william was left with family in Va. and attended school in Va., later being brought to Ky. (still Va.) by his Aunt or possibly she was a cousin. By 1791 a William was in Bourbon Co. and James and family were in Clark . James and Elizabeth first settled in the Lexington Fort. He drew Plot 7 on the original map and early depositions state he helped build the block house and raised a crop of corn. In a later depo James states that he was the same James living in the Lexington fort and that he and Elizabeth had since moved to Jouett and Howards Creek in Clark Co. on 400 acres. There are a number of sources about William and Jerimiah Frame visiting their sister Elizabeth and James in Clark Co. before they moved their famlies to Lexington and became wealthy land owners. J. and E.'s children could both read and write. Their youngest son Christopher b.1791 was a Quartermaster in the War of 1812. Sherriff William has numerous hand written records in the Bourbon Co. Courthouse. Both J and E signed their names. James is recorded in depos as having been with Daniel Boone's party of men who went after the Callaway girls and his daughter who were captured by Indians on Howards Creek. Capt. William Bush, Boone's friend was a neighbor and Christopher married his daughter Luanna (both died in Mo.). Christopher was a Silver plater and advertised in the Mt. Sterling newspaper at 14. James is recorded in Clark Co. as borrowing 600 in silver putting his farm and all property as surity. Rather a LARGE sum for the time particularly since there was little to no money on the frontier at the time. He obviously did not default as his will was probated in 1812 and there was no mention. We are direct from James and Elizabeth by son William and Nancy Field-----son Elbridge m. Mary Ellen Shane-----son Nathan Curtis Morrow (approx.1832-d.1927) m. Alice Ball----only child William Elbridge Morrow(1880-1976)and Mary Nell Orr(1880-1968)----William Elbridge Morrow(1923-2000) m. Jane Carothers Clarke my parents. We have 18 coin silver spoons stamped J. Morrow. Our leading silver expert in Ky. believes J. Morrow may well be Ky's first silversmith, particularly in light of son Christopher being a plater. Please if you or anyone has any info on this James Morrow please let us know, we have searched for over 50 years. Many people believe James to be the son of David , however there have been no sources listed not even in Worth's Tenn. Cousins nor any others we have read. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Jane Morrow Ferriell
