Here are a couple of hints, which you may already know, that could help you. If he got married in IL after 1879-1880, his application for a marriage license would have his birth info, as he knows it, on it. Place, mothers name and fathers name. With that, since civil registration of ALL births began in 1864 in Ireland, you should be able to find him and his parents in Ireland through the particular county's record finders.
