Patrick Morrissey (1) 1757- 1828 & Mary O'Gorman. Patrick was lured to Ballymakea from a county approx 8 miles away due to his taking of the Blacksmith's trade. He was given a lease by the landlord of 50 acres. the foundations of his old house still stand today. It is said that Patrick's grandfather fought in the losing side of the battle of Aughrim in 1691. The were small freehold farmers, but after the loss fled to Co. Clare. Anybody have anything that might help in the link to Co. Sligo? I am Ken Morrissey, my GGGGGF relocated to Ballymakea, Co. Clare. The earliest trace of our line of Morrisseys is of a Sligo man who survived 'the great disaster of the Battle of Aughrim on 12 July 1691. The family were independent small hold farmers in Co Sligo. Our man settled at Cloonreddan-r. Cooraclare, Co.Clare. Some time after 1770 a son or grandson (Patrick born in 1757) became a blacksmiLh. A blacksmith held a prized position in Lhe farming communities of those days. He was invited by the landlord of the Ballymakea townland to come and work for him with a rent on about 50 acres of his land. It meant a shift of about 8 miles over into the next parish. I would love to know more about the project (ps I live in Australia) Slainte Ken Morrissey Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have the following Morrissey family of Waterford County: John Power was married to Ann Morrissey and they were both born around 1800. They lived in Tramore and had a son named John Power (born 1842) who married Ellen Power (born 1852 in Kilkenny). Ellen was one of 10 sisters of my grandmother, Catherine O'Brien Duffy, born in Ireland in 1846. Ann Morrissey Power is my Tramore, Waterford ancestor.
